Apparently, the Bloody Mary thing happens because if you stare at anything long enough, your brain decides to start slacking off, so it'll stop noting a lot of details and simplify it. The problem is, the human face is very complex to our brains, so when the brain tries to simplify a human face, you get something terrifying-looking.

Having seen my grandmother deteriorate for awhile, I fear living long enough to be decrepit and highly dependent on others. I hope I (and everyone I know, really) conks out peacefully before doing that.
