Midnight Breeze

I had a serious emotional crisis and had to come back to Louisiana for a while. My MDD is flaring up again. Between loneliness, financial stress, and homesickness I ended up going off the deep end. I saw the doctor and he tried to put me on a medication that costs $115 dollars a bottle. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME? That would just make me even more depressed! Luckily he changed the order to an almost identical medication that only costs $4 a bottle. Much better...

I'm just gonna have to accept that I'm always gonna need meds to function properly through life's ups and downs. Better to just stay on them permenantly and not have to deal with relapses anymore. It's very hard on my mom to see me like this.

People who think i completely and utterly hate them cause theres only 1 thing i don't like about em cause given 1 year ago i would simply say "i hate everyone" but not now and i honestly think its one of the only improvements i have had if i even had any so it kinda annoys me to hear them say that to me or others cause its like i tried to improve for no reason whats so ever

My cell phone...
is being dumb.

It keeps lying to me about how much battery it has.
When I charge it, after a short while, it keeps telling me that the battery is full, but it's not, and if I unplug it, it's likely to die soon. I have to guess how long it takes for the battery to actually get full.
It also tells me it has plenty of battery left, and then it dies. So, I have to guess when I need to plug it in again.
So, I'm gonna have to charge it overnight every night and still not trust it. What's the point of a cell phone if you can't rely on it actually staying alive when you leave the house?

Also, multiple times now, it has had the bad timing of dying in the middle of sending a text message. So, when I turn it back on after putting it on the charger, I have to go into my Outbox and resend the text in order for it to actually go through.

"(Ticktock, time is running out) What are you doing now?
I don't know where you are, don't even know your name.
They think I'm crazy, my heartbeat goes up..."

I'm very sorry to hear about all that.  I've got something of a depressive mood as well, though I doubt its as serious as yours.

A psychiatrist suggested a few tricks that can help moment to moment; if you haven't heard they hopefully will give you a little help.

  • Breathe in for a count of 4, and release it in 8.  The trick is to fill your lungs and empty them, and the idea is to slow your heart rate if it becomes too excited, namely due to anxiety.

  • Pick two points on opposite sides of your vision, say two corners in a room.  Keeping your head still, look at each point back and forth as fast as you can.  I can't explain how exactly, but it occupies your mind long enough that any depressive trains of thought come to a halt.  It's certainly not as effective as a long-term treatment, but it can be a great way to just pause and reset if you're really about to lose it in the moment.

Also consider this: "functioning properly" is a highly relative term.  In terms of the mind, 'proper' depends heavily on what chemical (im)balance you're stuck with.  You're a fan of MLP, so you ought to know better than most that "the norm" isn't always "right"  :P

i always said "cell phones were unreliable" because of my experience with them but now this just proves my point and my Psp had that kinda problem until it totally broke beyond repair where i replaced it with new one after new one cause the peeps in the mall seem to keep ruining them (this i can not prove but it a suspicion)

How old is your cell phone? It sounds like the battery cells are pretty much dead if they can't maintain a charge anymore. My laptop has the same exact problem and it generally means the battery is old and won't hold a stable charge anymore. This laptop is around 5 years old I think. Batteries generally only last a few years and the max charge gets more unreliable and low as time goes on. Sometimes cellphone companies offer free phone upgrades after years of service I know our provider gives us a free phone upgrade every 2-3 years.

Well, my cell phone is kind of old, to be honest...

Yeah, I've had it for a few years now.
We're gonna look into seeing if we have a spare cell phone battery lying around that'll fit it and work better.

Depending on how things go soon-ish, we may or may not shut off our cell phone service until we can better afford it. If it weren't for that, we would go ahead and get me a free upgrade, since we're a bit overdue on the free upgrade each of us get. We won't do it right now because getting a free upgrade requires getting a 2 year contract, and cancelling contracts is expensive.

In this case my definition of functioning properly would be not bursting into tears 3+ times a day, throwing things, or having ideations that can't be discussed here. As it stands I'm gonna have some cleaning up to do when I get back. Broken glass all over the floor.. .

To be pedantic, not having anything you've listed might be a good "proper" for someone who is "neurotypical", but sadly for someone with an off brain chemistry (like those who suffer depression, anxiety, OCD etc.), the brain doesn't act that way naturally.  It takes a lot of effort, often too much, to try and put on what other people might consider socially acceptable.

There's a visual novel I played recently called To the Moon, and I'm reminded of a character's dialogue from a little snippet of it.  Wall of text/minor spoilers below.
Spoiler: show
One of the principal characters of To the Moon, River, suffers from an unidentified neurodevelopmental disorder, assumed to be Aspergers syndrome, since it's not named in the game.  One of her husband Johnny's friends Isabelle suffers at least a similar disorder, as Johnny talks to her about River's condition, assuming that Isabelle has at least a better understanding of River than he does.  Something she says in response to this really struck me about people with some natural chemical imbalance:

"...I was diagnosed when I was still young.  With effort, it's not impossible to acquire a guise of social norms systematically.....Me.. I'm an actress, because I've been doing it all my life. Not only onstage, but offstage...and at practically every moment. I've gotten good at it, because acting is the only option I have. It's the only way for me to be 'normal'. But River...she never did that. She remained an outcast and refused to learn how to step against it... I don't know if it was by choice or limit, whether bravery or cowardice... There are days where I just can't stand faking it anymore. And then, I realise that it's too late. The Isabelle that people know of is all an act, and the real me has long become a stranger."

All I'm really trying to say is not to be too hard on yourself for having certain thoughts or emotions and having difficulty controlling them.  I know it's not easy, but chemistry in the brain can be just plain evil sometimes.  That's hardly your fault, and you as a human being only have so much energy to fight against it.

I apologise for not having replied to you again recently,

I have been reading your posts, but feel my advice may not be effective

However depression and other similar states can be tough, but its important to remember that it is always possible to return to the state you were in before you had it.

If there was one thing that did help, it was knowing that others cared about helping me recover

**And I would like to say, while it can be hard to emphasise over the forum, I do really do care about how you are right now, and so I will continue to offer support to you**

and im not the only one, quite a few people have replied to your posts

You probably feel like this:

My depression will never go away...

I don't even know what caused it, and that worries me, how am I supposed to tackle depression when I don't know what caused it in the first place???

I cant be bothered to tackle my depression...

(Thoughts while speaking to others) I have depression, but you don't care, nobody does...

I used to love this, but its just not the same anymore

I don't care what happens to me
---
But ALL these feelings and negativity DOES GO AWAY
You just need to counter the symptoms, and I respect how difficult that is.

I'm here if you need me, however it is common to want to be independent

It may be a good idea to spread 'familiar' and friendly objects such as posters, to tackle home sickness

That anecdote sounds more like narcissism than aspergers to be honest.

Someone with aspergers has trouble reading, expressing and processing social cues. They are not incapable of feeling or empathizing, and in fact tend to be more honest about what they think than an average person (if only because they tend to make fairly poor liars).

Narcissism is pretty much the opposite. It, among other things, includes a lack of empathy and a very limited spectrum of emotions. A narcissist typically spends their life acting out a personality and is extraordinarily proficient at acting, lying and manipulating. Lots of CEOs and cult leaders have narcissistic personality traits, though they can be found pretty much anywhere (and all over youtube, hilariously enough). They are pretty much always, to keep it forum appropriate, not nice people. The clinical definition of psychopathy is a subset of narcissism.

Which is not to say To the Moons characters are unrealistic. People are a lot more complicated than that and all of these disorders are diagnosed with a set of traits of which someone must exhibit a certain number in order to uh, 'qualify'. Very few cases are done with actual brain scans, someone can display narcissistic properties and not be a narcissist, and it's even possible for someone to have both of these.

I'm writing this from both personal experience and quite a lot of reading and documentaries. Both of these actually run in either side of my family and I can say very few of my family members behave as a 'textbook example' of either disorder. I do have an uncle who is pretty much a typical narcissist and also the only member of my family who I genuinely dislike.

I did take the quote out of context, but I get what you mean.  I freely admit I don't understand much about aspergers.  I wonder if you'd be interested in seeing the scene in question, see if I had the interpretation wrong.  There are let's plays of the whole game on youtube (how I first found out about it) if you're interested, but I of course can't make you watch em.  If you do, let me know what you think, because now I'm curious.
Spoiler: show
Isabelle in fact does explain that people with aspergers do have the same desire to be with other people, just can't express it properly.  River herself struggles telling Johnny about something extremely important for years, even dies without him ever understanding the situation.  I feel it would make more sense to watch the actual story though, so I'm going to stop babbling here.

I'm sorry about not getting along with family members, and about my confused post.

My cellphone had the strangest event couple days ago, it dropped 60% in an hour, which is extremely unusual as it's a new phone, then it stopped. And then it stayed on at 7% for 3 hours. What the heck?

No need to be sorry, I was just rambling on about the supposed mental disorders or fictional characters, which was kinda shooting in the dark since i haven't actually played the game.

The game sounds interesting by the way. I might pick it up sometime and ill be sure to let you know what I think when I do.

Don't buy it for the gameplay or graphics, fair warning.  It's strictly a visual novel with a tiny puzzle element and rather clunky controls.  You buy it for the story...and the soundtrack.  Dear Lord the music is simple, but beautiful. By far the most replayed on my Ipod since I picked it up.

if you want to know, a lot of people in the team had to work a lot during the OSW, which include most of the people who are needed to set up and supervise the chat. Those people need a small break so they gave it to them.

TL;DR the chat will be back next Tuesday.
