EDIT: Found it: The A in AAA isn't an abbreviation. It just classified the size of the batteries (there's also B, C and D). As time went by it became possible to produce smaller batteries with nearly the same power. For each smaller battery type with the same power class an additional A was added... That's at least what I can tell from different comments on different articles... Makes sense though...
