One sentence: Pony-themed Space Opera set in a distant future Equestria, with civil war on the horizon.

Story:
Five hundred years after the return of Princess Luna, the denizens of the planet have spread out among the stars.  Technology has advanced to amazing levels, and holographs, starships, repulsorlifts, gravity fields, androids, hyperspace travel and more are increasingly commonplace.  The common currency is still the bit, though mostly traded electronically.  Instant communication between star systems is cheap and widely available, and modern jumpsuits are fitted with life support systems, heads-up displays, holonet connection and translation interfaces, as well as interfaces with all the modern technology now available.

Many factions have sprung up as ponies, griffons, goats, and more explored and colonized the nearby star systems, though hyperspace lanes are constantly threatened by rogue Space Pirates, smugglers in blockade runners and other low-life undesirables.  Unfortunately, a few of these factions are becoming increasingly belligerent, and it is feared that war shall soon break out across the stars...

On-planet, Homeworld Faction:
Another day arrived as Celestia's Sun rose on the horizon, as it always has since the dawn of time.  Hovercraft and sky-carts whizzed here and there between shining glass towers while businessponies, off-duty Starfleet soldiers and other folk milled about in the streets and on tall bridges connecting the buildings.  Stock prices appeared in midair as holograms changed from advertisement to news, and the sound of foals reciting the Citizen's Pledge could be heard through the windows of classrooms all about the planet.  A gentle breeze stirred the leaves of a tree in the rooftop garden of the Triple Crown Heavy Industries tower as a starship loomed overhead, preparing to make for deep space on another voyage.  Yet not all was peaceful; news articles all across the holonet speak of the Clockwork Empire attacking more and more ships, and of pirates and rogue extremists threatening hyperlanes.  And out of the mists of time, at least as ponies saw it, rumor came of the lost empire, the Black Rose...

-----

Off-planet/space, Homeworld Faction
Stars glittered everywhere the eye could see, except for that one pale blue-green sphere to the side as another twenty-four-hour cycle passed and "day" officially arrived.  Long trains of cargo held together by electromagnets trailed powerful ion thrusters as the transportation ships arrived at the spaceport or made for the rendezvous beacon to jump to hyperspace.  Sweet electronic notes floated over some intercoms, news commentary over others.  Space itself, of course, was silent as always.  A Starfleet cruiser floated by as it arrived at the beacon, then flashed suddenly before vanishing in a blur, jumping to the next star system to patrol.

*****

On-planet, Clockwork Empire
Ash.  Fire.  Brimstone.  The clanking of countless gears filled the toxic air of the lifeless world as mechanoids mindlessly attended forges, conveyor belts, hissing pipes and blazing caskets of slag.  Everything moved with a bewildering speed: bewildering, that is, for an organic mind.  In the mind of a machine, it was perfection.

-----

Off-planet/space, Clockwork Empire
The cold, dead stars gleamed everywhere in the endless expanse of Void.  Another ship arrived out of hyperspace with mechanical precision, quickly making turns and accelerations that would splatter organic lifeforms into their chemical components.  None of the machines within paid any heed.  Exactly three thousand six hundred second-cycles later, an identical ship jumped to hyperspace.

*****

On-planet, Nexus Empire
The light of Alpha Centauri rose over crystalline towers and straw-thatched roofs alike as peasants and nobles awoke to attend to their duties to the Empress.  Mares stayed at home and nursed the foals or cooked, stallions farmed the fields by hoof or practiced with crystal swords, bows and newly issued blaster rifles.  The distribution of holograms was somewhat unsuccessful, since most living citizens never used such technology before in their life and saw little need or use for the tool.  The view from the crystal castle was stunning, though the same as ever, as dragons flapped their wings over snow-clad mountains and unicorn guards came and went on their new hoverboards, still wearing their exquisitely engraved gold and platinum armor.  It was a perfect, lawful, orderly world, and they all obeyed their Empress.

-----

Off-planet/space, Nexus Empire
Starlight, that magical glimmer from the unknown voids beyond the protection of the Empress, could be seen all about as four starships and two sentry satellites orbited Proximus Centauri, eternally defending the system from those that would seek to oppose the will of her ruler.  There was no movement, no need for movement.  What creature would ever wish to leave the protection of the Empress?  This was the Nexus Empire, this was home.  May those that oppose it fall to the might of the Empress!

---In orbit high above The Equinox Home World---
With a flash And blue streams of light a ship came out of its warp jump heading for the Equinox Space Dock. As soon as it got within range The ships slowed. It was now only using its maneuvering thrusters and 1/4 impulse drive. This ship was a flagship/fortress class vessel given the name, The Galactic Phoenix, by its maker Techno Blitz. It was soon joined by three other vessels. One is a Modified Intrepid class medical ship. It is called the Reborn Star Phoenix. The second is a Galaxy class exploration cruiser. This one is named the Phoenix Star Defender. The third ship to join this happy little fleet is the defiant class prototype called, the Phoenix Star Runner. Their captain and commander is the already famed, for 6 separate defense engagements, Cosmic Phoenix. The engagements were in order from the first one to the last one. The first run in was with the Clockwork Empire protecting a close to boarder system. The second two were run ins with the pirates and raiders, protecting a trade convoy heading home to Sol system at the heart of the Homeworld faction. the third was another run in with the Clockwork Empire, this time escorting a noble envoy from Sol system to the Solar Empire for a diplomacy meeting with its leading personnel. The fifth run in for this team had to have been raiders and pirates again this time trying to haras a simple trading vessel for free supplies. the vessel seamed to have said it was heading home to the Black Rose Empire. His ships came upon this one by complete accident while heading to the final mission for its 3 month test flight of the prototype. The final one was yet again the clockwork empire trying to convert another edge world into its ranks. this final engagement had been a true test of all the systems on all four ships sense they were on their maiden voyage anyways. though that was also when all the system's bugs got found and fixed. on all engagements with minor damage and casualties they had come out with the enemy running back home with their tails between their legs. The captain hails space dock, "[glow=blue,2,300]Space Dock, this is Cosmic Phoenix here requesting permission to dock for repairs and resupply. Also I have the test reports for, my grandfather, Master Engineer Tech on his newest prototype. The Baby was perfect in nearly every engagement we had. Before I forget I have, for the Homeworld council, my patrol report.[/glow]"

((Magus and Nova, I hope neither of you mind that I added the Black Rose Empire trade ship to my first post or even mentioning the Black Rose Empire at all. Also don't worry everything that happened will be in the patrol reports he gives to the Homeworld council. Also am still looking for good pics for the ships.))

It was a not soo busy day at moonlights castle the citizens are probably trying to enjoy the holograms. That moonlight made public the hippogriffs now enjoy flying on the clouds and not use as mounts. Moonlight was on a balcony watching the citizens enjoy their day. The street were not too over crowded. Lightning dust walked next to moonlight.

Lightning dust said: moonlight can you tell us how exactly are we gonna distract clockworks insane empire. she said with a concerned voice lighty what did I say about asking about that. The reason that we barely leave our system is because we're trying to remain hidden until we are ready. Even though their easy to defeat with melee.im just glad no mechanoids crashed on to our planet.

In Bitopia, much of the world is corrupt, motivated only by greed and an unslakeable thirst for money.

A young stallion was finishing an arrangement with a client. No names; that was rule number two. [glow=yellow,2,300]"Weight of package?"[/glow] he inquired. The black-coated pegasus he was talking to shrugged and said, "Two hundred pounds, no more."
[glow=yellow,2,300]"Destination?"[/glow]
"Gaia one. Here's the orbital coordinates."
[glow=yellow,2,300]"Very well. A package weighing two hundred pounds traveling to Gaia one while staying in the law comes out to a fee of 30,000 bits. Half now and half when it arrives two days from now. Once you accept this deal, you are not allowed to change the parameters of the deal. Understood?"[/glow]
"30,000 bits?"
[glow=yellow,2,300]"I did not say my services came cheap, sir, but you would not have contacted me unless you could have transported this yourself."[/glow]
"Fair enough. I expect it there on time."

The younger stallion smiled. He looked at his holographic wallet and noticed the pegasus had done as he promised; 15,000 bits were now in his possession. He nodded softly and said, [glow=yellow,2,300]"It will be there on time. Have a good day, sir."[/glow] The pegasus responded, "Thank you, Mister..." The unicorn held up his hoof. [glow=yellow,2,300]"Rule number two: no names are to be exchanged."[/glow] With that, he strolled out of the building and to his waiting craft, the Golden Veil. There were two earth-pony workers lifting something into the cargo bay, presumably the package. He nodded to them as he boarded his vessel.

Moments later, they gave the all-clear that everything was ready for take-off. Asterian began to fire the impulse thrusters and his craft took to the skies, flying over the landscape and away to accomplish his mission.

Yellow Light looked out the window of the space station Starlight Castle as the sun peeked around Equestria; another faithful, beautiful morning.  She took in a deep breath of fresh air as she got out of bed--air that had probably been recycled several times over, but she took no note of that--and hopped out of bed, stretching her wings.  The disturbing news casts didn't bug this young mare one bit, but that was probably because she didn't watch them to begin with.  She didn't have time!  Today, she had her first pilot training class!

Yellow went through her morning routine of breakfast, a short workout, and a shower.  She tied her mane in a ponytail, packed up her flight training book bag, stuffed a hard but ripe spaghetti squash in the side pocket for later, locked the room on her way out, and trotted off to class feeling ready to take on the world.

The bridge of the Phantom Hourglass was alight with sounds most alien to a non-mechanoid, binary clicks and beeps between navigators filled the air around the two figures above the cesspit of information, with neither caring nor noticing the digital traffic. The first was rakishly thin, a construct extraterrestrial by even the standards of madmen, with long digits and a mysterious means of elevation above the second figure. The entire presence of this construct commanded authority and power over the sea of steel beneath him.
"I expect that this is the correct Star System and not another shrivelling end to a chase gone cold, Unit 390?" The voice was upper-crust even for the ancient Canterlot elite of the Sol System, and was barely containing the irritation it aimed at the second being. An appealing silver/blue clashed with the aesthetic of their environment, a sleek, almost feminine, body with graceful curvature that clearly held much greater prowess than the dirty metal which beeped and clicked below. Attention to the first being was given in spades, or so the being of silver gears seemed to be doing.
"I assure you, Lord Clockwork. The vein of crucial resources is marked to this planet. My logic capacitor may be damaged..." The mechanoid form of Unit 390 did not flinch at the rapid closure between her and Clockwork, his bright blue eyes burning like the innards of a star.
"So you keep reminding me after I expressly gave the command not to! Your defeat to an engine servitor would make more sense than an adolescent fleshling, a failure I shall not forget for a long time. If what you say of this planet is true, then you may yet redeem yourself somewhat! Until proof is found, however, your vocal processor is to be silent in my presence, am I understood? Clockwork did not wait for an answer, turning to the viewport of his colossal galaxy-crossing manufacturing plant, staring down at the world ahead.
"Prepare Mark 1's and 2's to obtain a foothold on this rock, 3000 troops total for planetfall alongside the cargo of the Earthshaker, then pull back. Unit 467, I leave Unit 390 and company under your control, pray that your Mark 4's will not let me down. Noted forces! Begin industrial mining of Alpha Centuri!"

In the Canis 2 System of the galaxy, a small fleet of ships orbits around one of the colonial planets along with the orbital space station. The ship, The Shining Star, a Marathon Class Cruiser, is in port with the orbital station, Ether. The other ships, Burning Star, Blazing Fire, and Dreadnought all await the departure of The Shining Star for what might be their next mission.

Inside the Orbital Space Station, Ether, Sheriff Buckeye Starwing is in the space station's brig, along with a couple guards, a few prisoners, and the commander of the station. "So these are the ones that attacked one of the colony ships? They don't look much like pirates." Buckeye looks at the commander. "This job you're giving me and my deputies isn't much than what we have expected." The commander looks at Buckeye. "Well, I'm sorry but you were the only one available at this time, most of the ships we have are either under maintenance or conducting missions. Besides, this might give your men a bit of a breather after the nine consecutive attacks you had to deal with."

"I guess you're right, it will give me and the rest a break. Besides its not that hard to carry a bunch of prisoners to the Homeworld. You can count on me sir." Buckeye beckons the guards to start moving the prisoners onto his ship. Once boarded, the prisoners were moved into the brig. Buckeye moves towards the bridge and checks on the status of the ship. "Is the ship ready to go?" One of the crewmembers replied while looking at his console. "Aye, sir. Weapons all ready to go. Ammo re-stocked. Engines ready to go. Navigations ready. We are ready to depart sir." Buckeye grins as a tactical map of the sector shows up in front of him. "Get ready to depart. Contact the other ships and make sure they are ready to enter into Slipstream Space."

The Shining Star detaches itself from Space Station Ether and joins the other ships for entry into slipstream space. "Set a course for the Homeworld."  Several disturbances in space appears infront of each ship. Each of those disturbances turns into a large hole, big enough for the ships to go through. "Enter now!" Buckeye gives the command and each ship goes through the slipstream space.

3 years of interstellar travel. 3 years sense the dreadful war. 3 years sense he saw with his own two eyes, the destruction of his homeworld, and empire. And now, after 3 years, he has finally reached the border of where it all started. They where at the border of Homeworld. One of Lord X's escort fighters radioed in.
[glow=black,2,300]"Sir, visual on the border beacons, sir!"[/glow]
The pilot said.
"Thank you. Return to "The Black Rose" for food and rest, you've earned it."
Replied X.
And with that, the fighter banked hard left, in the direction of their mothership. Once within range, Lord X contacted territorial border control.
"This is Lord X, caption of 8346 Phantom. I have with me 0114 Carrier, 3007 Factory, with a escort of 5209 Vultures. Permission to enter territorial space?"
X asked. He waited patently for a response.

The Wandering Magus

The reply to Equinox captain was almost immediate as the audio came to life.  "Cosmic Phoenix, this is Space Dock.  Clearance code transmission has been confirmed.  Welcome home, Captain.  Your grandfather sends his regards.  Please proceed to Docking Bay 94; personnel will be there to take your report, over."

The sentry ships peel off from where they were orbiting the convoy as the all-clear is given, and on the heads-up display the appropriate port is highlighted on the orbital platform.  Docking bay door locks disengaged slowly as the massive entrance opens up to allow the entire convoy to unload passengers and cargo through the passive force-fields without needing airlocks.  Robots moved here and there, heading to the locations where they would be most useful, such as cargo bays and loading platforms.  Mechanics and engineers mostly stood off to the side, stepping in only every once in a while if a robot wasn't performing correctly or the procedure in question was too complex for the very capable modern AI to handle.

-----

Border patrol responded to Lord X after several seconds; evidently the guards had been flustered by the sudden appearance of such enormous ships.

"Your Imperial Majesty, this is Border Command.  All clearance code transmissions have been confirmed.  The Council and Their Royal Majesties Princess Celestia and Princess Luna send Their regards and would like to speak with Your Imperial Majesty by holoconference or face-to-face by teleportation as soon as convenient, over."

The escort patrol ships broke off from their wide orbit as the all-clear signal is transmitted, and the rendezvous beacon marking the hyperlane to Sol began flashing green.

-----

As the Shining Star exited the slipstream and returned to real-space in Homeworld territory, escort ships from Border Command began to orbit the convoy as transmissions came to the ship.  Should the Sheriff choose to open the channel, the following message would sound:

"Welcome to Homeworld territory.  We have you on our screen now.  Please identify."

-----

Yellow Light found herself amid familiar faces as other flight school attendees, ponies and non-ponies, joined up beside her or rushed back to their rooms to grab forgotten gear.  Weary guards and pilots smiled politely to the plebes and youngsters filing by for their first day.  Some of the oldsters and first-class midshipmen joked among themselves about fresh meat with water behind the ears, but the presence of non-commissioned officers discouraged any actual teasing or misbehavior.

One space marine griffon with her helmet off gave Yellow a thumbs-up with a claw.  "Good luck in there, chick.  Just remember that back means up, and you'll be fine."

*****

Sirens sounded all over Nexus space as Clockwork Empire ships de-cloaked and exited hyperspace within a hundred thousand kilometers of Proximus Centauri and immediately began attempting to make planetfall.  The enormous ships could be seen from the surface of the planet and from the castle where Empress Moonlight resided, and unicorn guards quickly came and prostrated themselves before their Empress.

"Your Imperial Majesty, what is Your command?"

*****

Harmonia response to incoming ships was, as expected, cold.  Almost as soon as the Golden Veil exited hyperspace, it was wrapped in thousands of soft green vines and surrounded by escort sapling ships.  Electrical pulses sent through organic neurons, close enough to electricity, enabled the Harmonian Elder Guardians to send the transmission to the ship.

"Stranger, you have entered Harmonian territory.  Please state your intentions and send clearance code transmissions at once.  Prepare ship for boarding by the Elder Greeters."

Lord X nodded, smiling under his suit.

"Thank you kindly, and I would be happy to speak to Princess Celestia and Princess Luna face-to-face. Again I thank you."

Responded X. He looked toward all his crew members.

"Finally, after harsh travel, we have reached our destination! As you all should know, we originate from these very lands. I want all to be on their best behavior, and do try not to scare anyone, as easy as it is with what our armor looks like. Now, set course for those beacons, and prepare for another interstellar jump!"

All of the crew members cheered loudly and applauded furiously, happy to have all those terrible years behind them. Most, as well as Lord X, had a dreadful feeling that they would be seeing from that mysterious, and deadly, army again. Only this time, they would fight not for just vengeance, but to protect all they plan to hurt.

"This time, I will prevail! I shall not let the same fate fall onto any other empire, regardless of how we, or they stand with anyone else! They shall pay for the atrocious acts they have committed!"

He thought. He was eager to speak with everyone, and learn how everyone else has been handling their lives. He watched as a few of his escort fighters made their jumps, eager to get a move on.

Bravo 658

To be honest, Yellow Light didn't have the slightest clue what was meant by "back means up", but she was no fool, and held onto the phrase in the back of her head.  Unless the griffon was trying to confuse her, those words would probably mean something useful later.  "Thanks," she answered with a smile and nod.

It probably won't mean anything to me in the classroom, but who knows?  I'll find out soon enough, Yellow thought as she arrived at room 35.

Once the fleet exited out of slipstream, they heard the transmission and replied. "This is the Sheriff, Captain of the Shining Star, Marathon Class Cruiser. We are here transporting prisoners from Canis 2. Do we have permission to port?" The tactical map of the sector appears in the bridge automatically, showing Homeworld's space stations and other ships orbiting around the planet. The four large warships slowly proceeds further into Homeworld territory.

The Clockwork King

To the natives of the southern reaches of Alpha Centuri, Tartarus had broken loose from on high. Great comets of steel and brass hammered the earth, some clusters bringing chaos to primitive villages while some thundered into beachheads and oceans. The cargo spilled was more terrifying than that which delivered them, automata forms marched through villages aplenty with neither care nor consideration for whatever stood in their way. Villagers rising against the intruders were cut down near effortlessly as the forces of the Clockwork Empire converged on a single designated point.
---
High in the stratosphere, a servitor babbled binary extracted from video feed transmitted via the collecting defensive force, a message that cocked the brow of the Clockwork King "The planet is inhabited by independent life? Surely not..." the King pondered, hand stroking the chrome-black goatee he sported "Scans were completed months ago by 390's squadron, and though her mechanical tic is annoying so, her words rang true this time. No notable cities found from scans, no archiotech, no spaceports, nothing." In the end, Clockwork knew it was his call to make whether to pull back the troops for redeployment, but potentially lose his vein of preciously rare metal the Mark 7's needed to produce. "All forces, follow defensive deployment measures and shorten firing range. Any construct that approaches is to be destroyed. Mark 4's! The deployment of the Earthmovers shall begin shortly. Begin work!

Three of the four ships moved single file one by one into the dock to be repaired and resupplied. The fourth, the Phoenix Runner, docked with Tech's development lab near the space dock to be re-calibrated for its shields and cloaking system. The crew of the runner was given shore leave till the repairs were done. How ever long that was going to take. Cosmic left the bridge of his fortress class ship, after it had docked with space dock, and went straight for the trans-mat room so he could head down to meet with this personnel that was supposed to take his report.

"The only report this guy/gal is getting is my patrol report unless he gives me a good reason why I should give him/her my granddad's newest prototype's test results." Thought Cosmic waiting for the all clear to use the trans-mat system. "Something does seam off though. All of my ships had to have minor to major adjustments done to them in every engagement so far. I think I need to talk to Grandpa Tech just to be safe."

With the all clear given he is transported down to the station to meet with this personnel guy/gal to give his report. He Arrived at the station to see that it hadn't changed much sense his last time in port for this. He quickly found the tech in charge and leaning in real close he says, "[glow=navy,2,300]Commander, please take good care of the Phoenix Runner. We had only one problem with her during the test run. We had to practically jimmy rig the system to get her shields back online after the cloaking fields failed, taking the shields with them.[/glow]" He then leans steps back from the head technician and says, "[glow=navy,2,300]Also not a word of this to anypony. You know how my grandpa doesn't like me talking too openly about the prototype.[/glow]"

he nods to the head technician and starts looking for the pony he is supposed to give his report to. "I hope this isn't some bureaucrat trying to wedge in another kind of power gain for themselves." he thought to himself as he was looking for the pony he is to give the report to.
