I have a theory.
Cadance is royalty, but isn't related to Celestia or Luna in any way.
She called her Aunt (she did? Never heard it) out of respect, though not Princess because both of them are royal.
Now of course using this theory the question arises about how Cadance is royal in the first place.

I've had this theory that maybe she's descended from the royalty of the Crystal Empire, and I pointed out that her cutiemark is a crystal heart. Also, if you look at crystal ponies' manes, then look at Cadence's mane, it seems kinda similar.

Ummm... I haven't heard that, honestly. Unless it was in that sneak peak of the first 8 minutes of S3E1, I'm not sure they've actually said that.

well she's responsible for the empire, but not necessarily a member of it herself...  probably just assigned to the duty while the Sisters looked for a solution to the problem.
