You're...sort of right.
You see, thousands of years before even Discord was around there was no magic. There were but ordinary earth ponies and pegasi. But then one day there was a volcanic eruption, but only dust came out. When ponies investigated, there was a massive surge of energy coming from the bottom. That energy was magic, but it was trapped with an odd seal, I don't know the details of the seal. The ponies had decided to open it and suddenly the volcano erupted once more, but it spread magic throughout the world of Equestria and beyond. Thats when the newborn ponies suddenly started having horns.
The only problem...every few hundred years a unicorn with immense power has to travel to the focus point, we call it, and harmonize the magic pool or else it will...."burn out" you could say.

You're right actually. With magic in the air you naturally breath it in though by now through evolution magic is in our blood.
