I've never tried online roleplaying so far, but I'm very curious about it, and I'd definitely like to try

I hope you can take a look at our RPs at some point then!   If I might suggest a few I personally GM?  Pony Cosmology, Before Equestria, P&S Adventures, and Royal Academy of Magic If you like formal and complex posts, there's Silverdale Saga, and for just short no-story fun you can try out one of the Jump-Ins

I spent some time checking out the RP section yesterday, and I'm still trying to decide one to join, but I'm not an expert and I really don't know how to start...for example: first I suppose I'll have to create my character, then sign in a story (since I'd prefer a non-jump-in one, but it would be fine too, if necessary), but I don't know exactly how it works:
- can I sign in a story going on since quite a long time (such as Re-creation, which has 800 pages  )?
- if I do, do I have to know the entire development (and thus read all the pages I missed) or just the beginning, the present facts and the characters?
- once I'm in...what do I do? 

Would you be so kind to give me some tips and maybe suggest me which would be the best RP to try out among yours for a beginner like me? 

I hope that once I get into it, I'll understand how things go...

1) yes!  Re-Creation is always accepting new gods   and actually, many long-runners accept new players, and all of mine accept new players.
2) the latter, mostly; it would be the most realistic, seeing as that your character (like you) "just" entered the story themselves.  Of course, reading the rules is a part of "present facts".
3) talk! interact, socialize, meet up with other characters, state your position and current action and go from there.  Follow groups around, explore, anything really.
4) If I were to suggest a beginner's RP, perhaps Pony Cosmology, because you'd be able to get a lot of help from existing players and not be restricted too much in power.

tips:
figure out which genre suits you; some prefer fighting, others diplomacy, some stories, others just informal socialization.  Maybe you like long posts, maybe just a few sentences.
know the rules.  nothing is more embarrassing than realizing that you'd been doing illegal moves for ten pages.
understand the situation.  maybe those two aren't actually enemies!  maybe there are protocols to follow, or places to go.
be prepared.  have a backstory for your character in mind, so when others ask you can answer, or expand as you go along!
be consistent.  try not to contradict your posts.
be persistent.  some ponies just show up for a single post and leave; that generally just disrupts the story for others.  try getting in at least a few posts, and if the rp's not for you, then politely excuse yourself.
OOC, in OOC.  gm's and other players can get frustrated when they see ten pages of (()) without a single actual rp post.

and of course:

have fun!  it's a game, not a job or a class.  if you have problems with other players, PM the GM or say so in OOC.  if worst comes to worst, just contact a mod or report the post.

Yesterday I sort of created an OC, though I still haven't decided a name for him yet  ...I guess I'm going to join Pony Cosmology as soon as I'm ready...then I hope to join other ones too, when I get able enough
