It would be kind of cool to ride inside the train and have an option to sleep through the trip or walk around inside the train with a scrolling background by the windows. Sleep could basically be fast travel and riding on the train could be for people who just like stuff like that, you could make pretty interesting quests if NPC's were on the train.

Anarchy Online has a similar system, the map is all one interconnected map, but is separated into different areas. So after a while of walking in a certain area, you reach a border that you walk into, then it loads for about 2 seconds and places you on the otherside of that wall, having loaded up the area.

Although I don't think the LoE map is built like that, it appears as though they went straight from Ponyville to Canterlot, although whether or not that's temporary, I don't know...

Glad to see we can walk everywhere. I love just moving through the map, listening to the music. It's amazing!

that way, no jarring music swap, but slow, gentle blending from nightmare to peace or from peace to nightmare as you walk between Everfree and, say, Zecora's hut

We most likely will have fast travel (train etc.) to locations. But also the possibility to walk there.

Just to clear this up a little, there will be loading screens between areas. (I believe around the outskirts of towns?)
So, you can take the long route to another town, it just might vary from the way other MMOs do it.

Right now transition points between areas are clearly shown as portals as you can see in various in-game footage.
This might be subject to change and I don't know about the final map layouts either, but I think you'll be able to tell where you'll load into a new area. It will probably not just happen out of nowhere while you're walking across an open area, but certain paths will lead there.
