Scribble Books, a brown mare with a book for a cutie mark, stepped into the Ponyville library. She breathed deeply the smell of paper and binding glue as well as the freshly scrubbed oak wood. She had been looking to meet other ponies interested in books and the library was the perfect place for a book club.

Yes! Anyone can jump in! Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Mind Games was lounging on a bean bag in the fiction section, reading a book about Star Swirl the bearded when he noticed a brown unicorn (filly?) walk in. He thought about introducing himself, but the bean bag was comfortable and the book was intriguing, so he turned back to the book.

((I think I'll use my newborn variation.  ;))) A one week old colt also sat in the fiction section, unattended by a parent or guardian. They had royal blue fur, baby blue eyes, a short spiky brown mane, a short spiky tail and, surprisingly, they had a cutie mark concealed under their diaper which was three silver cogs. In their hooves was a manga that specifically said "teen" on the cover.

The door to the library opens and a grey unicorn with an off-white mane and blue eyes wearing a leather jacket enters.  He looks around the library and silently makes his way to the book shelves, quietly browsing the sections.

The brown mare, excited at the thought that some of the ponies in the library might like to join her book club, pinned a GIANT poster up on the community message board, levitating the poster and pins with her horn. The poster read

"Reading books. Writing books. Smelling books...
Scribble Books' Book Club is the place to meet other ponies that share your interests.
Anypony is welcome. No sign-up needed.

First meeting will be a 'meet-and-greet' on August 1. Ponies can vote on what book they would like to read.
Second meeting the votes will be tallied and the book of choice will be introduced and each pony at the meeting will receive a copy of the chosen book on August 4.

Ponies will have a week to read and reflect on the book before the third meetup where ponies can share what they thought.
The Book Club schedule will continue this pattern, voting on a book, introducing the book, and then talking about what ponies read. New ponies that come on a discussion day are still welcome to share their thoughts since each book includes universal themes that most ponies will be familiar with.

Hope to see you there!"

Scribble Books smiled at the wordy poster, knowing only book lovers would read the entire thing. She had already gotten permission from her old friend the ponyville librarian, Cover to Cover (every that knew her called her Mrs. CC). They knew each other through mutual interests since Scribble Books was the librarian from Canterlot, flown in to promote literacy in ponyville.

Low Key notices the brown mare putting up the poster.  Trying to be inconspicuous, he reads it from across the room.  As he returns back to browsing the shelves, he makes a mental note to come back in a few days.

Doomato

The sound of levitation rushed into Doomato's ears, drawing him near to the unicorn casting the spell.

Scribble Books

Scribble noticed a little colt, still in diapers, approaching her. She smiled at him thinking that he was looking for his mommy until she realized he was reading the poster and had a chapter book in his hoof. Scribble was immediately impressed, remembering that she was a blank flank for many years and had no interest in books until she was nearly a mare.
After the foal finished reading the poster, Scribble said, "Do you have any questions about the Book Club? Don't be shy, I would love it if you came since I know you'll bring a new perspective to the group. I'm sure you have lots of thoughts about reading and plenty to say." Scribble smiled encouragingly.

Doomato

"Umm... Ah forowy endoy de suspench, comide an actwion witin dis manga."

Scribble Books

"Suspense, comedy and action? I think you'll fit right in. We didn't have Manga back at Canterlot, I'll have to look into that ... if that's what popular here in ponyville. Canterlot reading was mostly nonfiction - old dusty scrolls about history, research, and magic. Do you have a particular Manga recommendation for someone new to the genre?"

Scribble looked sideways at the book, which looked huge compared the little literary prodigy, and it reminded Scribble of comic books, which she had seen before but didn't take much interest in them since she was immersed in "Cutie Marks: symbolism vs literal, a dialectic approach" at the time.

Scribble looked at the poll poster she was about to pin up and considered redoing it since most of the books on there were reminiscent of her Canterlot days. "I'm might need to take a different approach to this Book Club thing," she thought to herself. "especially if most ponies here read fiction. I should talk to some of the other ponies here and ask what they're reading and talk to CC to see what books are most often rented out."

Doomato

"En may opwinion, de bwest manga too stawt onn es Macsimum Ried. Ah storted dat won es mah fiwst manga end et pwunged mee stwaight ento da johnre."

hazardtime

Low Key can't help but arch one of his eyebrows at this toddler's rather advanced vocabulary.  Regardless, he approaches Scribble and asks, "Um, excuse me, ma'am, but I have a question - is there a list of books or genres to choose from, or do we bring our own?"

Doomato

((I'm one week old! The undeveloped mind of a baby and a Doomato spliced together. I is not toddler.  ^-^))

"Dwe ownly fing ah dwidn't liek aboat et wus da subwiminal adwertising torards MwaneDonalds. Dwon't worrea doh, dey ownly dew dat four dat won manga."

Scribble turned to the gray unicorn approaching and blushed in embarrassment at his question. "I was just thinking about." Scribble handed him the poll for him to look at - half of the books on there college graduate-level nonfiction. "After talking with this little guy," she gestured to the foal, "about what he was reading, I think I'm taking the wrong approach. I'm from Canterlot and I'm starting to get the feeling that Canterlot reading is very different from Ponyville's. So I'd really like to hear what you're interested in and what you'd like to talk about when we meet. If you'd like, you can make a list of your six favorite books, or your favorite genres if that's easier, and bring it to the meeting. The first meeting will be an informal introduction anyway so that would be the perfect opportunity for ponies to share what they're currently reading or what type of books they like to read. And I don't mind rewriting my poll to fit what's popular here. So what are your thoughts? What do you like to read?"

Post Merge

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me," Scribble said to the little colt. "I'll keep that in mind. I can tell you have a very acute sense for reading between the lines and making conclusions about what you read. I'd really like to have you in my Book Club. What do you say? Do you want to come?" Scribble hoped the little guy was interested enough to join. "I could really learn a lot from somepony like this," she thought to herself.

Doomato

The little foal nodded and fell onto his belly, accidentally.

Low Key offers a reassuring grin, "It's perfectly alright.  These titles are all very interesting, but we'll see what everypony else has to say.  I'm a fan of cerebral novels - new ideas, abstract ideas, unpredictable plot twists, and the like."

Doomato

Doomato's eyes widened, "Oh! Pawdon ma inthormelity. Ah thorgot too gat os accwainted. Mah naim es Doomato!"
