The fact that I have to jump through hoops just to make sure a gif I'm trying to post will actually animate on Tumblr.

Here's what the limit seems to be:
The maximum pixels wide it can be? 500.
The maximum file size? 1.99 MB.

I'm fidgeting with the gifs I've made to get them to fit that, so they'll be animated when I post them on Tumblr, and it's so annoying. Why does this have to be the limit?!

It's there to keep people from uploading a hundred 50mb gifs. Every MB you put on tumblr costs them money after all.

Not sure about the width limit. Maybe to prevent seizures?

Though if you really want to annoy them you can just split the gif up into parts
