PONY SCIENCE HURTS MY BRAAAAAAIIIINNNN DD:

Then my job here is done.

I am quite familiar with the Mendel model and will thus explain my OC's genetics.

As you may know, my OC is half-changeling and half-pony. What you may not know is that his mother is an EARTH pony, specifically pp nn aa. If you were a racist Pegasus or Unicorn you'd probably call this the lowest of the low. This gene combination is 100% Alicorn Earth.

So then why is my character a Unicorn...or supposedly one?

Changeling DNA is always the same except for in concerns to gender. As shown in the Season 2 finale, the Queen led all the soldiers - who were male. The thing about Changeling genetics is that females are extremely rare and are thus counted as sacred in Changeling society. On the other hand, males are so widespread that they can be sent to war without anyone giving an apple about them. This is why men are easily placed as workers and soldiers and women are automatically given high places in society. Also, because of the fact that the population is determined by so few females, parenthood is not a concern. In fact, mass apprenticeship takes its place for the males and one-on-one apprenticeship for females.

As you know, Changelings prefer to have a Winged Unicorn -like form. They also have magical ability, though like the male soldiers showed it's more used to create blasts than actual magic.

My character's connection to poison - which physically is a part of nature - and his ability to smith weapons that could utilize it in a way that affects enemies to such a high degree yet never accidentally harm the wielder is a result of his connection to metals and his ability to easily find and exploit the weaknesses of his enemies is a result of his connection to living things. This is all a result of his mother's absolute Alicorn Earth gene and its resulting strength within him. Studying magic was a result of his Changeling gene allowing him to have a horn and high magical potential. Though females in Changeling society are able to learn advanced magic because of their specific training while males are not, my OC was born into pony society and was thus able to find ways to learn magic.

The reason the Element of Poison is rarely used by unicorns is because of the fact that a strongly pure Alicorn Earth gene parent and a strongly pure Alicorn Unicorn gene parent are needed to have an offspring with such potential. Otherwise someone trying to master the element could end up poisoning their own mana and effectively kill themselves. Because my OC has a Changeling father his potential for that element was actually greater than if his father had been an Alicorn Unicorn, thus making his connection to the element pretty much guaranteed.

Off-topic, but yes. I'm a huge Spyro fan and am currently replaying the original series. I'm on Year of the Dragon right now.

Spyro the Dragon - if I am not mistaken - was the first PS game I ever played and was the first game I ever owned personally. I only played some Sega Sonic game and on random PCs Frogger before that so I have a huge thing about animal protagonists already which explains why I didn't at all think badly of FIM before I started watching it.

Oy rad, do know that if you say that about EVERY pony there won't be any girls left for the rest of us >.> xD

Anyway, cutie mark idea:

Hmmmm... Well since everyone else is doing it:

The bullying thing was natural in middle school. Of course, I was the one that got in trouble even though I didn't hit anyone - they hit me. I swear the administration gets paid by bullies... Tons of ISS for that.

The only grade I really failed (I passed but just barely) in was 5th grade. That was also the year that chicks were attracted to me. Fail at grades = instant chicks. Nice formula, eh?

In 9th grade I had a Reincarnation dream which seriously made me change my beliefs. Christianity went bye-bye instantaneously. Right after that dream I started researching philosophy, theosophy, myths, legends, etc. I believe in Root Races - the concept not the creator's specifications about it. I took an existential turn in contrast to GalvinRoe's nihilist turn and mastered "the Other and the Look" [seeing everything through the Other side of the Looking glass].

Eventually I began using Stoicism as a basis to form my own philosophy which I call Krestism. It utilizes the parallel universe concept and far far beyond it - being one of the first sets of beliefs beyond just universal.

Lastly, I don't really wish I was a girl as much as I wish I was in a female vessel (body). I find the male vessel weak and inadequate in concerns to what all it can be used for in comparison to the female vessel.

Oh, and I'm an optimistic cynic.

Final Fantasy 4 bosses. If they attack you you die but if you use "Steal" on them they never hit you. WTF?

I wasn't annoyed by bosses hitting me since they never did. I was annoyed by the fact that they couldn't fight me at all and if I let them I'd get obliterated. Lazy programmers... I want a fair challenge =.=;

too bad the clocks kept changing throughout the two seasons, eh?  from eight hour clocks to twelve hour clocks.

Who needs clocks :D
when you're trying to calculate temporal quantities? :]

All time is determined by the concepts of day and night as well as celestial revolutions such as the solstices. Clocks are irrelevant if time is defined only by what Celestia dictates.

Quote from: The Wandering Magus on 2012 May 08, 21:02:29What think you of my postulations on the biological nature of magic on page 2, or on the interaction between technology and magic?

There are many kinds of Vital Energy. There's Chi, Mana, Odyle, and more - someone work like Chi and come from within each individual. Others are free in the atmosphere and must be forcefully channeled through a person <- This is the method where people use staffs and orbs to help focus the channeling and make it easier. It is also the basic concept of mana.

Your theory's fatal flaw was in the assumption that mana lines within ponies were of a physical basis. Studies of such channels in humans are based around the concept of the Astral body, not the Physical body. This is because vital energies are believed to be just as metaphysical as the astral body and that to channel magic from metaphysical to physical humans must be able to do so from the astral body to the physical body.

Once magic gets to the physical body it automatically goes to the focus point(s) the practitioner has chosen. For unicorns this would be the horn. For humans the hands or where the third eye is supposed to be seems to be the natural choice with the hands being more favored because of the ability to attach staffs or orbs to them. Unicorn horns, on the other hand, are perhaps more useful than staffs or orbs even by themselves and thus are the best choice since the horn protrudes directly from the theoretical third eye point.

It is possible that unicorn horns are quite sensitive, being a magical focus, and thus putting a focus object on the horn itself could be disastrous and annoying. This would explain why crowns and tiaras are favored by all horn users since their proximity could be used to help focus the magic. As shown when Twilight's crown connected to all the elements, crowns are perhaps once of the best focusing objects a magic user could ever have.

While your mana glands explanation is plausible you must realize that it would not be sufficient enough to properly channel vital energies. Even if it is true an astral side to ponies would fulfill everything the physical body does not and thus make it more plausible.

In the traditional study of Chi, the lines and channels seem to be quite physical, or at least extremely interconnected with the physical to a medical extent.  The more "immediate" applications of chi users may seem much more metaphysical, but the lasting effects linked to hot and cool chi diets, acupuncture, breathing exercises and massaging certain focus points of the body seems quite biological in nature despite the West's best efforts to find such lines in the body.  Perhaps it was my focus on a Chi-like explanation that blinded me to a possibly more metaphysical explanation.

Perhaps there is a common ground between both theories, and the truth is a mixture of both physical and metaphysical components?  And regardless, it does seem that the science of magic is repeatable and experiment-able enough that it might not be improper to say that the "metaphysical" may imply be another form of the physical; in the same way magnetism cannot be sensed by any of the senses yet physically effects objects and is called a physical force, so perhaps the same is with magic?

That's what I've always believed (and I've learned). I'd suggest looking up the concept of the Fifth Force and how it relates to dark matter. In Alchemy the "Great Work" supposedly could be made from starting with a "black substance" and going through multiple stages till the Work was complete. What if the Great Work was a representative idea for any Vital Energy and the stages were unique depending on which Work (Vital Energy) was formed from the original black substance (dark matter)?

That's just a theory of mine.
