So most of the time, even when I've already picked an offence hero, some stupid Batman: 76 comes along and forces me to be a support. Don't get me wrong, I like being support usually, but I'd like to play as someone who can actually dish out some damage on their own for once...
I haven't had that problem often myself, probably because I'm playing either tank or support 90% of the time. Offense is actually my least played role, I rarely play anyone in that archetype. Since all the weeaboos just want to play genji all the time we're rarely hurting for offense heroes.
I have a pretty hard to describe thought process with hero selection. Although Zarya is my primary main I only play her about 35-40% of the time.
Basically I wait until several of my teammates pick a hero. If there's no tank I pick Zarya. If there's one tank and no healer I'll pick Zenyatta unless the enemy team has a Widowmaker, then I pick Mercy. (Playing Zenyatta against a Widowmaker is a respawn simulator.) If there's one support and one tank other than Reinhardt I'll pick Zarya as an offtank/bruiser (Zarya doesn't sync well with Reinhardt, so I never play her with him), unless the team is short on damage, then I'll pick either Pharah or Soldier 76 depending on exact comp and map. If we have 2 tanks, a healer, and sufficient damage I'll go Symmetra or Torbjorn depending on map.
Yeah, I really think too deeply into these things.
Basically it's good to have a main, but just because a hero is your main doesn't give you the right to play them every single game no matter what. It's very unfair and egocentric to expect your team to accommodate to YOU and never the other way around. If I'm the only tank and we have no healer then I can hardly be expect to be the one to switch. It won't kill one of the Genjiboos to play Lucio for a round or 2. Not like he takes any effort to pick up, anyway.

The Overwatch community's metagame fetishization. Maybe it's because I've reached higher MMR, but people need to realize that every hero is useful depending on team composition and map, and shockingly enough there are actually team compositions other than Reinhard + Lucio + 4 McCrees that work...better dare I say.
People love hating on Zarya and saying she's useless. If you play as Zarya and your team loses you'd better be prepared to get blamed for not playing Reinhardt instead. Sorry, but I don't like Reinhardt. I don't want to spend the whole game holding down right click. Sure, I'll play him from time to time; just like I play every hero from time to time, but don't expect me to main him. Zarya is my jam, and for a good reason. She's potentially the most effective tank in the game.
Let me ask you this: How many tanks in Overwatch can reliably protect their teammates without said teammates needing to be directly behind them? The answer: one - Zarya.
The reason you rarely see Zaryas compared to all the Reinhardts, Lucios, and McCrees is because of how braindead low those heros' skill floors are, and how little effort it takes to make a difference with them. And most people suck big time with Zarya, wanting to run around throwing up barriers on some random Torbjorn or something that's not even in line of fire and then wonder why they can't get their energy up. And instead of learning to play her they just switch to EZ mode Reinhardt and never bother with her again.
Played properly, Zarya rocks the battlefield like no other tank, and people notice. I always get upvotes with my Zarya plays when I have a good team to support. Heck, one time I played Zarya on Gibraltar, made some mad pushes, and got a PotG in which I solo'd 4 enemies with a graviton surge and 100 energy grenades. Next round the entire enemy team decided to try and stack 6 Zaryas...they didn't make it past the first checkpoint.
Zarya main 4 lyfe.

Alright, after all time times I've driven across northeast Texas I've just gotta say it: Texan police are not doing their job in keeping our highways safe. An alarmingly high number of drivers on I-20 completely disregard traffic laws and just drive however they want without consequence. I see it all time time, people speeding 10+ MPH over the limit, people swerving between lanes without signaling, people tailgating and overtaking like they own the highway, and the police do nothing about it. Driving on I-20 is more about survival than transportation.
I've NEVER once seen anybody stopped by the police on I-20 as much as I've traveled on it. Yet I just came in from Shreveport and I saw a total of 3 accidents. It's completely ridiculous. Traffic laws mean absolutely nothing if the police don't enforce them. I seriously don't feel safe driving on that highway. You see that kind of behavior in Louisiana much more rarely, because Louisiana police don't put up with it. If you drive down I-49 you can note police speed traps and patrols at regular intervals, and I see people getting pulled over all the time.
Texas police, kindly get your act together. I should not feel like I just walked off the battlefield every time I commute to and from Shreveport.

I sometimes call myself a 'red-pill thinker' invoking the original meaning of the term, which means accepting a hard truth over a comforting myth or lie. Unfortunately they term has been hijacked by a bunch of angry, sexist young men who've been dumped for the first time and are now mad at all women.
Look, I get it. It's totally normal for teenagers to become jaded against the opposite gender after experiencing their first heartbreak, but the difference is normal people grow up, get over it, and realize that it's unfair to paint half of humanity based on your experiences with 1 or 2 individuals. The Red Pill guys aren't teenagers, they're young adults who never got over their first bad experience with a woman, and are now angry at all women as a result.
Grow up, guys. And stop hijacking innocuous philosophical terms for your sexist echo chamber.

For that I'd suggest the classic article Varian Wrynn is Right.
When you see everything the Horde put Varian through over his life it's hard to call his attitude toward them unjustified. Id go so far as to say he has shown incredible restraint and given the Horde chance after chance after chance to do good, which they squander every time.

Well, I liked him for the reason most people disliked him - I liked the fact that when he was introduced in WotLK he came out swinging and refused to turn the other cheek at the Horde's BS. Some may call him a warmonger, but he was just acknowledging the war that was already there but the rest of the Alliance didn't want to see. It's not like he was just lashing out for no reason, he had a whole laundry list of reasons for hating the Horde.
Seriously, it was about time an Alliance leader stood up and acted like they had a pair, Varian filled that role nicely. I might like Greymane if he takes the fight to the Forsaken instead of just putting up another wall.

I just looked into some of the lore in WoW: Legion and I'm totally livid - they killed off Varian Wrynn! Right when he reaches the pinnacle of his character development they kill him. Because God forbid the Alliance have a leader we can be proud of! How about killing off Green Jesus, huh? Even horde players are getting sick of that Mary Sue!
What's worse, rumor has it that Genn Trumpmane is going to become regent since Anduin has no leadership experience. Oh God, no! That idiot did a fine job leading Gilneas 20 odd years ago by giving the Alliance a massive middle finger and walling his people off from the rest of the world - and look where it got Gilneas.
Blizzard, I am disappointed.

People saying Overwatch ought to be free to play are so clueless, from both an economic and a sociological standpoint it makes no sense if we're thinking about the longterm quality of the game.
Pay to play acts as a disincentive for cheating. If a game is F2P then people have no reason not to hack and cheat for the hell of it. Who cares if you get banned? You can just create another free account and jump right back in. Cheating exploded in TF2 after it went F2P. People actually create throwaway accounts just for the sake of cheating when they're bored because they think it's funny, ruining the game for the 15+ other people on the server. If a game has a $60 pay gate then people are less inclined to cheat because they know they'll have to buy the game again if they get banned. No point playing $60 for the game + $20 for a hack just to get permabanned after 20 minutes of 'playing'.
Disregarding all economic arguments entirely, this alone amounts to a better game experience.
Besides, how cheapskate do you have to be to not realize what a good deal $60 dollars is for hundreds upon hundreds upon HUNDREDS of hours of entertainment? It's just a one-time fee and then the game and all future content are yours forever. Compare that to a micro-transaction model.

Well my recruiter called me this afternoon and told me my waiver has been approved. So I've officially been accepted into the air force. I should be jumping for joy right now, but I'm kinda scared spitless about the SSBI.
If I want to go into cyber systems I'll need top secret clearance, which requires a thorough SSBI. During which they'll interview my entire dysfunctional family looking for contradictions between what I say and what they say. I'm particularly worried about my father and oldest sister. They're both alcoholics and I barely associate with either of them. If they say something stupid and the investigators buy it I could get dishonorably discharged so quick it'll make my head spin.
I'm so worried about it that I'm seriously debating going into structural instead, which doesn't require any security clearance. I'd be selling myself short, no doubt. However, I'm more concerned with just plain getting into the air force period. I don't mind physical labor, but as a futurist I know that in the not-so-distant future manual labor will be a thing of the past. I don't want the bots taking my job. Plus, as a transhumanist I'd like to take a more active role in technological advancement.
I just really hope this all works out. I've come way too far to get turned away now.

Like I didn't see this coming...people are complaining that some of the heroes from Overwatch are offensive because they're so stereotypical. Like how the Russian heroine is a stereotypical butch strongwoman. Or how the Japanese heroes are a general ninja and Dragonball Z-esque archer. Or how the South Korean heroine is a no-life gamer geek.
Folks, news flash ALL of the heroes are stereotypical! Have you not noticed how the two Australian heroes are practically ripped from Mad Max? Or how the two American heroes are a generic G.I. Joe and a stereotypical wild west gunslinger? That's how the game is designed - it's supposed to be cartoony and exaggerated. People just only get uptight about the non-western heroes. I'll bet if the non-western heroes WEREN'T stereotypical the very same people would be complaining that they're "too westernized" and "not authentic".

Also, two more things about Overwatch:
1. HOLY CRUD THE FRAMERATE IS AMAZING!!!
2. I don't know why, but while I like nearly all of the characters in Overwatch, am I the only one who thinks Mei...doesn't really fit in? Don't get me wrong, I really like playing as her, just...I dunno, something just seems a little off about her.
She's just very unfun to play against. She can freeze you solid in just 2-3 seconds leaving you totally helpless while she kills you, and she's dang near impossible to kill between her ridiculous immunity ice block with self heal, and her ice wall that she can use to save herself. She's the ONLY hero that I feel is genuinely overpowered right now.
I think it was hypocritical to nerf the duration of Zarya's projected barrier yet let Mei keep her ridiculous AoE freeze. They said they nerfed the barrier because "It was unfun to play against. Attacking Zarya's barrier is bad, and 4 seconds felt like an unreasonable amount of time to have to hold your attacks." Yet it's okay that Mei can freeze you totally solid for 4 seconds? Ridiculous.
There's a reason teams spam 2-3 Meis on defense.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not talking about her ultimate, I'm talking about her regular left click attack.

After months of hype I finally got a chance to play Overwatch in the open beta this weekend and I'm hooked. I played it for 10 hours straight last night before having to force myself to stop playing and get some sleep. The game is incredibly easy to pick up and jump right in. It only takes one round with a hero before you have the hang of them and know how to play them.
I'm definately going to be maining Zarya. I tried to get a taste for all the game's playstyles, but I still haven't played half the heroes because I kept going back to Zarya. If someone else picks Zarya though I also really like Winston, Zenyatta, and Soldier 76.
This may actually be the game that gets me to stop playing TF2 after 8 years.
