Tyiev shot Yagdra a withering glance.

"Captain, we are working to boost our technological prowess, but what you have to understand is that Sotoa has had close contact with Yuktobania's R&D centers. We are at a severe disadvantage on technology, and we have no support from other countries. Rest assured, though, we are in the process of preparing retaliation systems... which will be on a need-to-know basis. Remember- the ground effect craft's rod missiles show up on radar, so the attacks are avoidable. Also, they told me you pilots were the best. Do you not think you're up to this?"

Original Characters / Re: The Nimbusverse
2013 Sep 13, 11:34:52
Okay, I've put this off too long. It's high time I actually went and wrote out what makes the Nimbusverse unique, so without further ado, here's the scoop. Keep in mind that since this is an alternate timeline, certain things that may be true for the show canon do not hold up here, and the history is actually quite dark at times. This is especially important when speaking about the Alicorns:

Long before Equestria was formed, the three pony races were nomadic groups, living off the land. The true power in Equestria belonged to the Alicorns- a relatively advanced race that quickly took control. Under the rule of Queen Aurae, the Alicorns saw themselves as superior to the other races, and actually went as far as to hunt down and either imprison or enslave the nomadic ponies. This went on for centuries. Ponies were frequently impressed into service to fight against the Griffons, who continually fought for Equestria's plentiful resources. At the height of Alicorn power, Aurae had a coastal capitol city built- the city of Radiance. It was here that two important Alicorns were born; their names were Celestia and Luna.

Celestia's and Luna's parents were part of an underground group that believed that the Alicorns' concept of superiority was wrong. They believed that all ponies could use their uniqueness to live in harmony, supporting one another with their respective abilities. To this end, they sought to create artifacts which they believed would cleanse the Alicorn race of prejudice; the Elements of Harmony. As Celestia and Luna came of age, their companions' actions became more pronounced. They struck out often against their rulers, freeing pony prisoners and disrupting slave caravans. These actions caught the Griffons' attention- with Equestria divided, they realized, they would have a better chance at gaining a foothold in the country. The group was approached by a representative of the Griffon Kingdom, and on that night a plan was made to finally overthrow Queen Aurae and restore harmony to the land. One week later, the Griffons launched a mock attack on Radiance, giving the resistance time to sneak into the palace. Once inside, the resistance ovepowered the few guards there were and captured Queen Aurae. There, they declared that the fighting was officially over and revealed their intentions to the city. However, the Griffons quickly turned on their former allies, throwing Radiance once again into chaos. In the scuffle, the resistance knew that they were doomed, and Celestia and Luna were given the Elements and told to flee. Aurae, however, had other plans. Free once again due to the confusion, she confronted the two sisters and stole the Element of Magic. Cut off from Aurae by the fighting, the sisters could only watch as she tried to siphon the Element's magic in an attempt to boost her own power and stop the Griffons. Wielded by a corrupted soul, the Element backfired, nearly destroying Aurae. The sisters barely managed to escape before the Element disintegrated (hence why the Element of Magic normally has no physical form), leveling Radiance and twisting Aurae into something no longer an Alicorn. Aurae rose from the ashes of Radiance as Chrysalis, the Hive-Mother of the Changelings. She used her newfound abilities to reshape the survivors of Radiance into her army, and strove to hunt down the only threat to her- the bearers of the rest of the Elements of Harmony (the remaining Griffons quickly fled to their home country).

Celestia and Luna wander the wilds of Equestria, and eventually fall under the care of a tribe of Earth Ponies. While there, they begin to understand what life was previously like for the other races, and they decide that the best course of action is to restore order to Equestria. The sisters eventually sneak away and head back to the ruins of Radiance. Once there, they are surprised to discover Cadance- an Alicorn filly. Cadance confirms that no other Alicorns remain, and is amazed to discover that Celestia and Luna have the Elements. Their meeting is short-lived, however, as the Changelings surround the city and close in. The sisters and Cadance retreat underground, but end up trapped. With few options left, Cadance sacrifices her Alicorn form to cast a suspended-animation spell, freezing Celestia, Luna, herself, and Chrysalis underground. Without a Hive-Mother, the Changelings retreat to their subterranean lair and lay dormant. Without the threat of the Changelings or Alicorns, the ponies begin to organize into progressively larger groups until the three pony nations emerge. From here, the story follows canon up until the pony nations merge into Equestria. I'll post part two shortly.

"Why am I here?" Feisler echoed. "I'm here because the 'Sotes got angry and decided to shoot at us. That's about it. I came from inland. There hasn't been a war in Verusea for nearly thirty years- we even managed to stay out of that Belkan mess. So yeah, you could say I've never seen war. I wouldn't say I broke up, though... My words may have been harsh. I just wanted to see Final get to the ground safely.

The projector whirred to life, displaying an image of an oblong, dark, almost disc-like shape. The quality of the photo was grainy, and Feisler had a hard time making out what it was. If he didn't know any better, he'd have sworn it was a UFO hoax photo.

"This will be the goal of your mission today," Tyiev said, pointing at the image. "In the 1960s, Sotoa worked closely with Yuktobania to develop a ground-effect aircraft- basically a plane designed to cruise at low level and high speed, much like a hovercraft. Such a vehicle could be larger than a standard hovercraft, and potentially be capable of extremely high speeds. This image was captured from yesterday's launch site, and was tracked at just over Mach 1. Obviously not a ship. We believe that the vehicle that fired upon you and our navy yesterday was a ground effect aircraft, configured for taking out ships and their air support in one quick dash. We've tracked it via satellite, but we lost it in a fog bank this morning. We know where it is roughly, but it's up to you to find this threat and eliminate it. On another note, Chancellor Schavan of Sotoa formally declared war this morning. I can't impress upon you enough how serious this has become. You need to be on top of your respective games. Are their any questions?"

Feisler rubbed his eyes. "What do I think about him? I'm trying to find time to break it to him that he should have listened and done a gear-up landing. I just can't bring myself to do it. He's barely an adult! He lost every man in his squadron yesterday and he came back for a safe landing. That's nothing if not commendable."
105
"Come on," Feisler said with a grim smile, "let's get you something warm to drink."

... [end of mission]

Feisler was rubbing his bleary eyes as he sat in his chair in the briefing room. Up front, a few intelligence officers were discussing some points with Colonel Tyiev. Fiesler turned his head, looking for his other squadmates.
106
"I'm sorry," Feisler said quietly, and turned away. "Listen, if you need somewhere to go... there's a lounge in the ready room. I can take you there if you'd like."
107
Feisler sighed. He'd never had to speak to another airman in this way before.

"That was an excellent landing. How are you feeling?"

Post Merge

(Sorry I've been on and off. I was working on Dark Hooves' original aircraft, which is now complete)
108
"Then I guess we're sleeping out here tonight," Nimbus concluded. He couldn't help but feel homesick, watching the pale moon rise over the featureless desert, and he knew it would be a long night.
109
Fiesler approached from behind.

"Are you the pilot whose callsign was Final 6-3?"
110
Feisler comes in with a crosswind on the second runway and taxis in. When he gets out, he heads over towards Equinox. Medical personnel have already arrived.

"You're gonna be okay," he said, simultaneously looking around for the pilot of Final 6-3.
111
Feisler flew over, banking a wing and acknowledging Final's landing.

"I'll have some words for him," he mumbled, "but for now, he's alive, that's all that matters. Equinox, you're up for landing. Bring 'er down."
112
Feisler fired a single missile near the end of the runway, in Final's path.

(We have two runways. One of them would just be a straight crosswind. I misread and thought you were already on the ground, sorry.)
113
Feisler felt panic begin taking over. The F-16 was getting closer to the edge of the runway, and the brakes were obviously shot. Sure enough, the aircraft was trailing hydraulic fluid as it sped towards the sandy beach at the runway's edge.

"Retract your gear," Feisler said, wincing at the thought, "once you start scraping the ground, pull back on the stick. The extra deflection should slow you down, and there's no fuel left in your aircraft to ignite."
114
Nimbus sat alone, eyes scanning the horizon. By his calculations, there were about three hours of sunlight left, and he knew the desert had a tendency to get cold at night. Turning to the group, he spoke.

"Guys, I think we should get moving. This desert's gonna get cold pretty quickly, and there are some mountains a few miles away. If there's anyone else living here, that's where we'll most likely find them. Maybe then we can figure out why we're all here."
115
Tower called up Equinox, still trying to come to terms with what had happened.

"Equinox, cleared to enter the pattern, number two for landing behind Final."
116
(Oops, I missed quite a bit.)

Nimbus looked around at the large group around him. Just a few moments ago, he'd been alone. Now he was anything but.

"So... anypony have any idea whatsoever why we're here?" he asked, warily keeping an eye on the sun as it began to dip lower in the sky.
117
Feisler pulled into formation next to Final.

"Okay, I'm following you down. If anything comes up, I'll spot it. Do not forget that I know you can do this. Put that plane back down on the tarmac."
118
"I see your aircraft, final. Listen- pitch for best glide speed. Tell me- is either wing dropping? Is your approach stabilized? Use opposite rudder; that should take care of the yawing."
119
Feisler circled around and instantly swore. "Yeah, there's a crater towards the start of the runway. You're going to have to eyeball your landing. Pull full brakes and back elevator once you're down. It'll be a short field landing."
120
Feisler keyed his mic "Final, you need to get back to base. You're probably running on fumes by now. I've got 'em."

The Mirage went full afterburner, sweeping its guns across the bombers and performing an Immelman, righting himself behind the Bears and firing off a few missiles. The Bears burst into flame, but one went down slowly, dropping bombs towards the base.
