More of a fridge horror thing than anything else, but the holotapes/terminal entries/etc. left from before/during the Great War that you can find in the Fallout games. There is one holotape in Operation: Anchorage that records an extremely terrified American soldier hiding in a closet, whimpering that he just wants to return home to his family and his dog. Out of all of the times I've played O:A, I've listened to that tape once.
Another horrific thing in Fallout is the entire premise of the Vault system. Forcing citizens to sacrifice themselves, turning them into mutants, etc...just terrible.
More overt would be Ravenholm in Half Life 2. I didn't know that ammo was scarce in there my first time through...it got hairy towards the end. But WOW that place gives me the creeps.

Hi! I'm Kolth; you might have seen me around as Scoutaloo. I love talking about myself, but I never know what to say.
I'm a writer (you don't say?). Reading and writing have always been a major part of my life. I've read the classics, I've read the young-adult stuff, and everything in between. I LOVE reading MLP fanfics (for whatever reason). If you ever need a review, I'm an Expert-level reviewer on FiMFiction. Check out my qualifications here:
My main Internet hangout is MLPForums, though I see no reason why I won't stick around here for a while.
My dial-up is currently working on downloading the game...hopefully I'll be able to play it before the next century! Can't wait to meet you all.

Hey all! I'm Kolth, and I figured if I joined up on the MLP:Online forums I should join this forum as well! 
So I'm a writer (mainly realistic, science fiction, adventure, etc.), and am always looking for an excuse to not do my work and write a story, ponies or otherwise. I like long walks on the beach and poking dead things with a stick.

Star Wars Episode 1: Racer was my first video game I ever played. Still suck at it, of course. 
And, obligatory, is Earthbound. Definitely not underrated, but of all of my friends I have ever asked exactly one had heard of it before I mentioned it.
