You're welcome! I was the one who added Singapone, since we received some complains from players from Asia complaining about not being able to play the game correctly due to high latency.
Sadly, not a lot of players were online on this server, so it was the first we had to shut down due to lack of available moderators and high server costs compared to the number of online ponies. I sure hope to have a server in Singapore again for the open beta! Maybe a less expensive one, but it will nonetheless have a lower ping than others for players in SE Asia.
And yes, server names are in fact tied to their location! Europonia was in Amsterdam and served Europe, Amareicas and Coltorado were in the US, and Singapone was in Singapore!
Also, ping is mostly related to the route the data takes to go between your computer and the server. This route is very very rarely a straight line, it can go through multiple countries even if you are physically close to the server location! The number of online players can be a factor in the ping value, due to increased network traffic, but it is most of the time not the major one for our game.
Sorry for the late reply! I'm glad to see that Singapone was a good idea

~10000 players in total last OSW. Bare-metal is not needed since we are opening to the public only every few month, and they have setup fees, etc. VPS are far less expensive with in our case similar power compared to bare-metal. We might switch to bare-metal upon release tho!
For game servers, we currently use RunAbove's "S" Public Cloud instances (4 instances per game server, so 12 in total during last open server event), having each 1 Xeon core @ 3.7GHz, 2Go of RAM, SSD disks and 1Gbps internet connection. In addition, we have different servers (mostly DigitalOcean VPS) for our website, game database, etc. We run all our servers on Debian (Linux)!
