I too am having this problem every time I try and connect. One time I got an error box to pop up.

This is happening to me too. As soon as the servers started at 12:20 I was able to get on first try, and then when the servers were getting DDoS'd, I was able to join every time still, but now that they're fairly fixed, I can't get to the character select screen.
