Post by: Proudy Hooves on 2013 Jul 11, 11:35:51
Actually, all the forum recognizing russian (Cyrillic) symbols right but not in PMs. Is this a bug actually and can it be fixed?
Highlighted the ???? part in the screenshot that should be Cyrillic symbols.

Still here and i'm not going to drop that bug. Got even more proofs this time.
I told my russian friend PM me and here's the result (From that PM of course):
Spoiler: PM Screen • show

QuoteCyrilic: ??? ?????? ????????????? ????????? ??????
Translit: Eto prost russkoyazichnaya textovaya stroka
English: This is just russian langusge text string

But in forums these symbols are working, see.

QuoteКириллица работает на форуме (Cyrillic symbols are working on forums)

At least tell me is it possible to fix that bug? Cause there are a plenty of russian-speaking players and it a little hard to talk russian using english :<

PS: Also sorry for double-posting :<

And less will use this, but how about kanji? You know, Japanese text?

Japanese text works on the forums too: こんにちは

But when I messaged myself I got the same bug Proudy Hooves did. I'm going to assume any non-english letter won't work in PMs.

So my question is:
How are the PMs any different in this way that causes this?

A small possibility is that PMs can only be seen by the person you direct the PM to, or the multiple people selected to see it, whereas normal posts like these can be seen by everyone. Maybe when they were doing that, something got mixed up in the programming or whatnot that causes the symbols to not work.

Wow, not only me noticed that glitch. Glad to see some feedback for this bug.
Hope this will be reviewed and fixed as soon as possible.

It's been a month with no feedback...strange, they usually respond to bugs quicker than that.

Likely the issue is that the database can't store those characters in PMs, but they're allowed for forum posts. I don't know why they'd be set differently for either, but that's what it sounds like. I don't have control over that and I don't know how plausible it would be to change. I wouldn't expect a fix any time soon if it's ever fixed.

That's the reason I haven't replied. I don't know enough to say anything definitively, and those who can address it have had much more pressing issues than this, to be frank.

Well, thanks for the reply, even if you don't know the true cause of the problem.

honk.
Still here and around in case of some things.
Why i've upped my topic? I won't let it die cause it's a quite of a problem still despite on the difficulties.
Cheers!

I don't think this is a bug we can fix. I asked around and I was mostly right that the issue has to do with how PMs are handled internally and it's not worth it to try to fix. Sorry guys. This is an issue that plagues most Simple Machine Forum-based websites.

How about in the new chatbox? Do they work there?

It seems they do WORK in chat.
Me and my russian friend already checked them. Everyone was seeing our letters :U

So, the summary of this issue:
1. The forum issue won't be fixed until waaaaaaaaaaaay further notice and stuff.
2. Non-english symbols seems to work well in chat.

Alright!

Maybe I can shed some light into the situation.

The forums uses the default encoding of UTF-8, which includes support for Cyrillic symbols.

However, you only get ? right?

It's (most likely, from what I can gather from other forums) that the OS is having trouble recognizing the characters (since it uses a different character encoding than UTF-8)

If that is the case, then downloading the Russian Language support pack for the OS should solve the problem.

Everything that I can gather suggests that it is the OS and not the forum itself.

We do not support languages other than English anywhere except in PMs. The permissions appear to be flipped in the forums and the PMs. PMs should be allowed to use cyrillic, but the forums should not (so that does need to be fixed.) The chatbox is a separate plugin we added, which currently has no setting to disallow specific characters. If we had such a setting, it'd probably be on.

EDIT: I added this "setting" as well as several other censors and things to keep the chatbox tame without direct moderation.

That being said, locking up.
