I think you should make it so if you post twice in a row it merges it into one post to prevent double-posting.
If you post twice in a row, you can ask a moderator to merge the post for you, or you can simply copy the second post and post it into the first one, putting a notification in the second (now blank) post informing a moderator to delete the post.

People also have the option of also deleting their own posts so a moderator isn't required to fix an accidental double post
But that can be a lot of work, and some browsers can't copy/paste. (Yes, it's true. I can't copy/paste.) The idea is to make it so you don't have to do that. And there isn't a mod who's on 24/7, so that can be annoying too.
There's an edit Button and a delete Button. No mod intervention required, to be honest.
Right, but, I just think it would be convenient.
I don't know alot about SMF forums but I believe the merge option is a moderator tool and cant be used by members. I think the only option is to either manually retype the post in your first post and delete it that way or wait for a moderator to take care of it, but i'll wait for someone who knows these forums better than me to say something about that.
I know you can't do that in Kunena.
I didn't mean a merge option, I meant like it automatically becomes one post.

Hmm, in my opinion if such an option existed I would imagine the mods would have already implemented it to save them the work of merging posts, but again, my knowledge of SMF is quite limited

Hopefully the time stamps are correct. :s

QuoteMySQL timestamps are stored as UTC, converted back and forth to current server timezone.
Well. The simple solution is to remove timestamps until I figure it out, if ever.
Yay, now we won't have any more double-posters! :D

How does this affect two consecutive posts that pass the character limit, when combined.?

I didn't know there was a character limit :o
I think it ignores the character limit, but I haven't tried it out yet.
Edit: It gives you the "The following error(s) occurred while posting this message:
The message exceeds the maximum allowed length (20000 characters)." error.

Ah dear, I see a rare but potential problematic problem >.<.
Well I could always remove the character limit, or increase it. But 20,000 characters is a loooooooot of characters, I don't think we'll run into a problem too much.
Agreed, not horribly often lol, but there have been a few places I've exceeded that limit >.<.

I've heard of someone somehow reaching that limit in the RP board.
Also, I think Lyra gets close to it sometimes.

Would be nice to have the limit cut, entirely. The problem hardly ever comes up and no harm in leaving a theoretical 'unlimited' possibility of characters. Besides, if someone decided to 'take advantage' of this, I chuckle at the time it would take, even if it was repetitive nonsense. Such things would be easily cleaned up.
As it goes, *I* would prefer an 'unlimited' number of characters to work with.

Oh, trust me, all someone has to do is type a bunch of nonsense or click an emote several times, then select what's in the text box, copy it, and then paste it hundreds of times, then select all of
that, copy, and paste it several more times. Easy gigantic post. It wouldn't be too hard to spam with unlimited characters that way.

Exactly lol. Still, to fill up 20,000 characters takes dedication and although some enjoy spending their time on such pranks, we've hardly seen it up to now and increasing the limit won't increase this attitude.
Honestly I don't see any reason to HAVE a character limit lol. If space is really needed, and I don't think I'm assuming too much by saying, "it isn't." For it to be efficient there would have to be a post limit as well.
Whatever the case, I vote for a 'limitless' character 'limit'. It will probably come in place once in five hundred posts but I like to keep my posts tidy and I really see no reason for HAVING that limitl. Most posts on this forum are a sentence, if we move into more discussion based zones than I'd say an average of 750 characters and I believe that's a very generous and unorthodox method of rounding.
I think the character limit is bad for OC pages. It prevented me from being able to make them full, 3 Dimensional characters.
I want to try the post thing to see it
Post Merge
btw how are you all
Exactly! See how useful that is?
it is and is probably easy to program in if the programmer knows what he is doing which I'm more than sure he does. Hay i could probably do it too
I'll increase the limit to 50,000 characters (please don't actively try to spam and test this limit).
I think the main reason SMF made a character limit is because of any errors that may occur. A person once sent a PM that was 20,000 characters with no breaks and it ended up crashing his inbox. We had to manually remove the message. :I
Anywho, hope everypony enjoys the new Post Merge and the increased character limit. ^-^
