Title: Fingerprints on he Internet
Post by: Little Judas on 2013 Feb 02, 08:19:42
This one time I had a conversation with my family about leaving your name and personal info on the web.
Because even companies and other institutions screen you through the internet and judge you based on what they find.
So I began to think, how many links does Google find if I typed my name.

Spoiler: The Damage: • show
In total I found 6 links that lead to a bit of info about me.
2 to a topic here (that are unavailable to see), 2 to the archives of a guestlog of a festival (that mention my love for metal),
1 of my dad (where he mentioned me as his son) and last a family tree (where my name was spelled wrong).

So I think I'm pretty clean and anonymous on the web.

Now my question is, how clean or dirty are you on the internet?
Type your name in google, you might need to use "NAME SURNAME" to get a finer search.

This topic was brought to you by Judas, not to acquire your personal data but to raise awareness.

        Raise awareness, raise awareness
        One, two, three, four
        Together, we can raise awareness
        One, two, three, four

I typed in my First and Last, and my First, Middle and Last names and absolutely nothing came back to me, interestingly enough, because I purposely make it easy to figure out who I am and general information about me. A number of times it's led to a job, reacquainting old friends, or people sending me questions because they're curious about something (which I enjoy answering immensely.) Don't forget that a footprint/fingerprint on the internet, or anywhere for that matter, can be a very good thing when you leverage it correctly.

Obviously, my Facebook and Twitter come up. Since I have a gmail account, I apparently automatically have a Google+ account as well. *Rolls her eyes* Kinda need that gmail account to have a Youtube account, so yeah.

Apparently, there's someone whose middle name is my first name, and they share my surname. :P

For some reason, there's a MyLife.com thing with info about me. No idea how that happened, and it's kind of... annoying. Of course you can sign into it via Facebook...

Nothing? Wow, that's rare, really rare.

That is correct, not everything should be negative about that fingerprint (therefore the topic was started to raise awareness).
My step dad for instance, as an architect, he needs to get as many contacts and possible clients as possible.
Or my brother, who needs sponsors for the charity-rally he's participating in.

But of course it should also be known that are people who miss out on jobs because of embarrassing fingerprints.

*Googles first and middle name*
Yeah, I'm not gonna search 71 pages if anyone is me.

I went through 10 pages of my name, just to find out. There are like 500 people with the same exact name as me.  :l

For my full name, middle included, I came up with 5 links total: 2 to some ancestry website I've never heard of, and three to my mom's memorial page.  Without the middle I came up with a lot more links, but at least the first 3 pages seem to have nothing related to me.  Having no social networks besides a couple forums, where I use screen-names, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

I've heard more than my fair share of stories of people not getting a job because of what they've posted online, and its that exact reason I try to be very careful, especially when my real name is on the line.

Looks like my name's pretty common, too, though with first middle and last together, I get weird lists of my entire family from a place my dad used to work at...

Well, I discovered there is a detective in VA with my name, and some guy in Exeter, UK, which is hilarious as I used to live snd work in Exeter, Ontario....
My Facebook amd google plus popped up, but surprisingly, neither of my deviantart accounts popped up.

Also an old Co worker of mine was talking about me on twitter, lol

How am I reminded of Dwayne from The Office?

My name is common so that's not a problem, I also use a business email and a private email so people can't look me up by my favorite username.

Huh. My name's rare, but common. It's strange...

And I barely even pop up in any of the results

For my nickname/sona's name: I search Jenzy and I get Spanish YouTube videos. The hay?! o.O

But add Pony at the end, then you finally found me o_o

In conclusion, I search my natural and actual name and my usual nickname and I'm nowhere.

Search Jenzy Pony and you'll finally find the stuff I've done X3

Oh gosh... *hides*

I found only three links that pertain to me. Two were from school and the other was some registration thing for when I went to Bronycon.

No pictures at all.

I hardly exist.  ovO

Hmm... Apart from an old Twitter account (That I'll delete)  and my post on Anneli Heed's Facebook, nothing showed up!

That is odd... I mean... I even have a Facebook and I share my name everywhere! :P

As for "Julius" nothing showed up. For "Julius Pony" only a link to my art thread showed up...

Now, if you search for my other two usernames... lol

Oh my gosh you're right! Haha!

I did some more searching and included information I've released publicly, which is my first and last names, and my state and city. All I got was my change.org user page, my soundcloud page, something on a Heroes character, and something about Google Maps. Yeah I'm pretty far under the radar it seems.
