Title: LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online, MMORPG)
Post by: The Wandering Magus on 2012 Nov 29, 13:09:32
Any thoughts, opinions, reviews, discussions, etc etc?  Also tips for other players either new or experienced, easter eggs, etc.

((and no, I did do a search for it on this board and the only thing that came up was a suggestion by lurk to meet up in it))

I played it a bit, it's a fun game. The start of the game is a bit slow because you have to do like 30 quests before you can leave the start zone and roam freely.
It's easy to pick up and play, it runs very smoothly even on some poorer computers, theirs unique classes to specific races, and instruments! Musical instruments that you can actually buy and make custom songs with!
It makes the social part of the game so much fun! You use the 1-9 buttons for sounds and you can change the pitch from high to low.
EDIT: You don't need to use IRL money for the instruments, you use gold in game.

Another very cool feature to the game is you can look however you want, for real this time. You can pick up something you can't even use yet and make your clothing look like it, so you can have high defense with light looking armor or a smaller weapon than what you have. Theirs limits though, you can't make a short sword look like a greatsword, it has to be the same weapon type.
EDIT2: For clothing the limits are that you can't make your iron boots look like cloth, it has to be the same type of armor.
Theirs also items in the game SPECIFICALLY made to be cosmetic and cool looking. They tend to be expensive though.

Tips: You can do deeds in every area of the game (like visiting five sites or defeating thirty flies etc) for Turbine Points (TP), usually 5-25 TP per deed.  TP can be traded in for expansions, quest packs, new areas, new skills, extra inventory space, and more.  And yes, it is entirely possible to go through the entire game, and get everything there is to get, with just deeds, not a single red cent from your pocket.

Tips: Defeat everything in sight that's yellow, you get more points for defeating yellow than green.  Red usually isn't worth it, and run when you see purple.

Tips: Loot everything, and keep it if you have room until you get back to a vendor for fixing equipment.  They will literally buy everything, even random bug shells and slimy goo, sometimes for gold when you get to higher levels.  You can also turn in seemingly useless things five times a day at green colored Task boards in cities around the game, such as Bree or Hobbiton.

Tips: lock the items you want to keep in your inventory.  Then you can just click "sell all" when you go to the vendor.

Tips: Vendors can fix your equipment, but wait until the equipment is broken before fixing.  Half-broken equipment works just as well as fully-new equipment.

Tips: Quest weapons and armor are better than the stuff you get at vendors, so think twice before buying that supposedly cheap new set from the vendor.

Tip: Hunters run faster than other races and can share speed if you want to get to the next point faster.

Tip: The mount ability costs TP.  Do a few deeds before you try getting one so you don't have to pay money.

Tip: You get extra stuff on holidays!  Try doing holiday quests during the time they are available for special items!

Tip: Don't try doing fellowship quests alone, you WILL fail no matter how high level you are.  Trust me, you can get defeated in a level-twenty fellowship quest as a level-fifty character, easily.

good job! :)

More tips: If you survive without dying once all the way to level 20, you get the title "The Undying" (just for pride, no perks)
Tip: Go ahead of the slowpoke you're escorting and kill the enemies before the slowpoke gets there, it's faster.
Tip: If you're ranged, don't let them get anywhere near you.
Tip: Stun first, shoot next.  Or if there's multiple enemies, stun the others while you're concentrating on one.
Tip: Figure out the sequence for maximum effect and minimum cooldown, or you might find yourself standing there taking hits and not being able to do anything.
Tip: Fishing does absolutely nothing besides giving you bragging rights and decorations.
Tip: It's faster to go cross-country than to go on roads.
Tip: Some food only increases power, not morale.
Tip: Keep an eye on your power meter.  If it goes to zero, you can't do anything until it recharges again.
Tip: You can move your controls around a bit if you want; look in the options menu.  It's a lot easier to rapidly mount/dismount when the button is in a convenient location, etc.
Tip: Don't go past Chetwood into the hills if you're anywhere under lvl 40, there are lvl 50 uruk-hai there.
Tip: When farming for reputation points, refuse the quests that have you go kill bosses in the South Downs in Bree, unless you've got lots of friends to help.
Tip: Farm reputation points, they give you awesome gear and stuff.
Tip: Keep all your mathoms, especially the mathoms you get from quests or from defeating enemies.
Tip: If you're looking for profit and don't want to work too hard for it while exploring, choose Explorer.

Nice job Magus for bringing in more players :P
As for Julius and I we're on Gladden. Sucks to be on different servers though.
Lemme drop a Tip: Don't feel hurried to reach the level cap, enjoy the ride and read the quest dialog, you won't get the full feel of quests if you just click accept and finish them.

Best part about max graphics are some of the textures and the gorgeous draw distance. It makes you feel like you're a really small dot in a large, large world.
Oh have some screenshots on that!

Ah well, 60% there. Won't be long now... ovO

But then I'll end up spending an hour trying to decide on what class to play.  X3

Lucky for me, I've had a really nice Geforce graphics card in this computer for while; it can handle just about any game with no problem. The only things holding me back is good old AT&T internet... :l

On the bright side, however, it's now 85% finished!  :D

Internet connection has little to do with framerates, so I think it might be an issue with too much stuff on your hard drive or you're running too many things at once.

Bought 100 apprentice seeds, 100 buckets of water and 100 handfuls of fertilizer.
Planted 100 yellow onions.
Ended up with over 1,200 yellow onions.

I'm going to run out of money cooking them all into things before I can sell them! D:
See I need to BUY other ingredients, and even if I didn't I can't just find ingredients to make other ingredients, it's ALL PURCHASED in a store!

Please note, I'm not mad. I'm just making a point.
Also, I'm laughing. I got "Master Apprentice" from yellow onions alone. lol

I also got "Master apprentice" in cooking for making pork with the onions. lol

I still got like 1,19-something onions.

lol good job! :D  you should be able to move to the next tier now!  And you can vendor all the apprentice-level materials, since you won't be needing them for your next levels ^-^  unless you want to use them for morale boosts when out questing :P

This morning I got up to Expert farming AND cooking.
I made 15 cabbage patches.
Ended up with over 200 cabbages. :I

Now I have lots and lots of tasty stuffed cabbage.

It's...a little too easy to raise your skills.

You should team up with a forester, and collect all the hides you can get off animals if you want to level in that ;)  I'll see if I can help you out when I get online tomorrow or the day after, but if you're high enough level and want to level fast, you can try looking for leather in the Auction Houses.  Of course, it'll require bushels of copper/silver/gold, but you can probably get bushels of that if you're around lvl 20 by going to the northern Barrow-Downs and killing everything in sight in one of the barrows.  I prefer the one that has the empty entrance and opens into three giant rooms, since it requires minimal running and the mobs drop lots of loot without being too much of a hassle if you're careful.

lol too bad the sea rarely ever shows up in the Books before the Fields of Pellanor :P  I guess the designers don't want anypony getting strange ideas and trying to sail off Arda into Valinor all on their own.  That, and I don't think they've expanded anywhere near that far yet; I know they have Rohan, but Gondor's not released, and Ered Luin doesn't go far south or west enough to reach the Grey Havens.  And Forochel saps your morale when you go for a swim :P

I was fighting a spider queen, she had 4 minions that would fight with her.

I killed 1 of the minions before having to use a revive. Once I revived I healed and fought her again.
I WOULD have killed her, since I killed the other 3 minions easy and it was 1v1.
UNFORTUNATELY some other spider that wanders about got too close and joined the fight.

It always makes me feel awful and lazy, and that I should stop playing.
It makes me hurt inside with the conflict of either forcing myself to play when I don't want to play or to play something I want to play and feel worse about being farther behind. :c

I hate it, I wish I couldn't feel so left behind.

Don't feel bad about it Teal, I have no life.  :]

I've logged hundreds of hours on over 4 different games; just play the game as you see fit. Play it to enjoy it; just sit around in Bree and watch people go by, get a drink at the Prancing Pony - it's an entire world to do whatever you please in!  ^-^

And that's why I love MMO's.  :D

Your right about that, I tend to play MMOs to socialize with other people.
I actually HATE doing quests with other people. They always rush and try to do it as fast as possible. I tend to go slow and take (alot) of time to do a single quest.
Dungeons didn't bother me too much unless your allies are 'tarded but that's why I tend to not even go into dungeons in the first place.
I also can't stand how other people, no matter which class I play, tend to make me look pathetically weak.
Me-fights an enemy, kills in 12 seconds.
Other guy of the same class-Insta kill enemy.

@BluesMusic~ So here's all the good things I said about the game. ^-^

Agreed. Honestly this game has music that is so relaxing that I like to play it while drinking a cup of tea every time I get a headache.

Also i'm currently level 7 , and my username is bluesmusic.

But I love how the skills in this game just begs you to get friends to help out. Like if you want to be an armourer you have to get some friends to be prospectors so you can all get profit.

It's probably one of the most decorated, well designed, simple and fun MMOs I've ever played. x3

@BluesMusic~ So here's all the good things I said about the game. ^-^

Grr....As much as I love being a glass cannon, and hiding behind my team-mates to deal damage, solo instances are a pain sometimes... >:(

In other news, I just found Bag End and the Party Tree....I need to go exploring more often.  X3

Also, the more I look at it, the more it seems that I'll have to throw $10 at this for the Moria expansion. Oh well, I'll just grind some extra tp out of my 2 current characters till I can get a ride to Gamestop... :I

Yep exploration is one part of the game I almost never get bored of, especially if you go to the corners and the very borders of maps it's very rewarding and intruging. Swim the Brandywine south for example and you'll see a bog-like place which is part of the Southfarthing :O

Ahhh that, well as you level up more you will find more and more people. Especially in big towns like Bree and Esteldín there will be quite a few players roaming around. Again in the endgame town where I visit regularly the general population is around 50. There are always several hundreds playing the game at all times.
Also if you go to Brandywine or Landroval servers you will find a lot of people.

if you feel like starting over in another server :P

when you get to Eregion there's usually always a few around, at least for me.  I'm not seeing too many in moria for some reason.  And yes, the crafting hall in Esteldin usually has at least two other players, since it's one of the few places with superior workbenches and is next to the crafting guilds.

Speaking of crafting, if somepony wants to request items, I can mail wood weapons and light to medium armor, any tier up to legendary.  Just get me some hides or wood if you can, if you can't I'll go get the hides and wood myself.

Yes Scholars are very much in demand, also you can farm billions of things and sell them to other people in giant stacks  ^-^
You can make weapons too, but you need to get ingots for yourself, which are forged from ore mined from the game world. That's a Prospector's job.

you can also choose explorer if you just want quick silver/gold without needing to actually craft much, and also make light/medium armor for yourself.  Lots of choices.

Bringing this thread back to life after re-disocvering LOTRO (I've been playing a ton of League of Legends lately... X3).

I've gotten my hunter to level 30, and trying to find stuff to level up on. I also sold one of my hats on TF2 for a rather large sum of steam funds, and got the triple pack with it, and still had like $35 leftover!  ^-^

So yea, trying to get friends into it, and enjoying the Rune-keeper class a LOT.  0:)

Okay!  whoever wants to try joining the kinship I just made, called Equestrian Legends, please send mail to either Forchalthiel (me) or Edlamir (teal), and we'll try to be online at the same time.  I apparently need 8+ kinship members within 5 days, or else the kin gets disbanded.  Once I send the request and you accept, I'll promote all of you to Officer and let you all go recruit others ^-^
