Supposed to break the noodles in half and drop them in the water. :I That way they're completely submerged.

But yesh, noodles can burn. There's a ramen box thing you can get called Yakisoba, and the instructions specifically say that if you don't pour the water to the fill line, your noodles might ignite and burn. They're delicious, so it's worth the risk.

My friend was making a salad in school. He had to put some vinegar to it.

He mixed teaspoon and tablespoon.

Those are some pretty awesome mishaps.

One time in 6th grade my class was on an overnight field trip to live on an old ship for the duration. It went fine for my class, but as for the other class going on that trip, one of the guys assigned to make breakfast in the galley was apparently not too experienced in cooking. He was supposed to put salt in the stew he was making.

He mixed teaspoon and cup.

I once managed to get a pudding with a gooey inside.

I mixed up! It was supposed to be fully solid. I put about a whole bottle of milk into it...

I once tried making French Toast with that... Horrible diet bread because there was no other bread.

The resulting... Stuff... Looked like and tasted like pancakes, sweet, sweet pancakes. :P

And...

I once tried making rice, nothing special. I added so much stuff and I cooked it in such a way, that I got myself a fine Risotto. :]

I cooked a frozen pizza once

Forgot to take the cardboard off the bottom

I'm surprised it didn't catch fire, but the crust didn't cook at all.
I also tried cooking chicken wings in the microwave.  Not recommended.
Oh, and the time I tried reheating my Tim Hortons coffee and burned the cup.  That was a joy.

I'm a man living by myself so i'll likely come up with a few more of these.. X3

Cooking frozen hot wings in the microwave is sooo much lower quality. Most of the time, they're slimier if you cook them in the microwave rather than the oven.

Always have your pizza sitting on top of something, not just right on top of the bars of the rack in your oven. The pizza can sink through the bars and make a gooey mess in your oven. Seen it on the internet a few times.

I've burnt hot chocolate and tv dinners because a family member put our microwave's voltage to max which lowers the time needed to microwave stuff safely.

how did you manage to set spagetti on fire  o_o ?

If the Yakisoba ramen is any clue, I'm guessing that dry noodles will ignite when exposed to excessive heat.

Oh yeah, if you cook hot dogs in a microwave, make sure to stab them a few times with a fork. If you don't put holes in them, they'll explode.
Title: Re: Odd cooking mistakes
Post by: Rissian on 2012 Nov 26, 03:05:11
That actually almost happened to me when I was cooking a corn dog once.  :I It didn't explode but it did mess up the corn dog.

I once left a cookie in the microwave I was reheating it so it would be soft and gooey again turns out I left it in for too long because I got distracted and the smoke alarms started going off there was no fire just a smokey cookie.  ovO

My cooking turns out good usually 70% of the time the other 30% can sometimes have odd results.

I just... I don't... this forum.

If you've ever put peanut butter on your toast immediately after it comes out of the toaster, you know that peanut butter tastes even better when melted.

Now, melt some peanut butter in the microwave, but only for like... 3 seconds. Mix it with jelly, put it between two slices of bread, and you have an amazing peanut butter jelly sandwich.

If you try to melt it for too long, it'll burn and smell really weird like burnedness and pickles and mustard.

That actually makes me wonder if melted peanut butter on an apple is better then normal peanut butter on it, I bet it is.

So I learned you should never ever put poptarts in the microwave, it turned the inside of the poptart into cherry flavored glue that refused to come off your teeth it took some time to get my teeth clean again after that and I'm still unsure as to why it turned into glue.  :I

(Now I want a peanut butter jelly and banana slice sandwich for some reason, I bet apple slices would also be good in it.  :3 )

A microwave heats something from the inside out, hence how it cooks popcorn and can explode lasagna and hot dogs.
Meanwhile, a toaster heats it from the outside in, which tends to let you make the outside of bread crispy without burning the inside.

Normally, the stuff inside the poptart isn't exposed to a lot of heat because the outside part takes most of the heat.
Title: Re: Odd cooking mistakes
Post by: Rissian on 2012 Nov 26, 05:12:29
Yup, I already knew that it heats things from the inside out I just didn't expect it to have that kind of effect on the poptart. There was just no way of me knowing that poptarts would turn into glue when heated from the inside out as most things similar to them tend to melt instead.  X3  It wasn't gooey glue either it was already slightly solid and sticky at the same time. Kind of like jolly rancher candy.

I just reheated a rare steak in the microwave, and it came out like... medium rare. I don't understand. And it kind of bothers me a little, considering I do quite enjoy my steak rare.
Title: Re: Odd cooking mistakes
Post by: Rissian on 2012 Nov 26, 05:34:03
Err, is it because rare is usually on the inside of the steak? As the outside is cooked first on grills and stoves. x3

(For some reason rare steaks tend to upset my stomach, the sad thing is they taste good I wonder if I have trouble digesting meat for some reason. Chicken and Turkey never bother me though since they are lighter. :l )

Maybe your stomach just has problems with semi-raw meat.

And yesh, but I didn't expect a short time in the microwave to actually do some real cooking. I just wanted it warm, not cooked. It's hard to explain. My brain is derp.

My brain likes to derp occasionally on me as well. I can't remember half of my cooking mishaps and I know I've probably had more than just burning cookies or glue poptarts.  ovO

(Our Microwave when set to high can burn or cook certain things in seconds.)

Burnt chedder cheese is no where near as good as a burnt cheese pizza, the chedder cheese just tastes pretty bad compared to the cheese used on normal pizza which tastes really great burnt, especially if just the cheese burns and not the crust.

I like to see that most of these stories are involving the microwave.

Microwaves...  ovO

I've made 'Campfire Marshmallows' before...
Spoiler: Story... How to Waste a Bag of Marshmallows • show

On the inside of the Rice Krispies® box there was a recipe. It said:

INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 package (10 oz., about 40) regular marshmallows
- OR -
4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal

STOVETOP DIRECTIONS:
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

3. Using buttered spatula or wax paper evenly press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:
In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.

Note

-For best results, use fresh marshmallows.
-1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow crème can be substituted for marshmallows.
-Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.
-Store no more than two days at room temperature in airtight container.
-To freeze, place in layers separated by wax paper in airtight container. Freeze for up to 6 weeks. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

First, I tried the microwave instructions since I thought they were easier. I put the marshmallows and butter in the microwave as directed, but since I didn't have a bowl that fir 40 marshmallows, I used a smaller bowl with a smaller amount. I put it on the correct time as well. After 15 seconds, the normal marshmallows puffed up, about twice their size. The melted butter was crackling and the marshmallows had popped out of the bowl they were in. I quickly pressed "Stop". ( What went wrong?)
Next, I tried to save the "puffed" marshmallows. I put them in a saucepan on medium-low heat. ( It was supposed to be on low. My bad.) Gradually, the marshmellows stuck to the spoon I was stirring them with and turned into a big blob of caramel... I then tried adding Fluff to it which caramelized as well. I have not attempted Rice Krispie Treats again.

My mom tried making a smores in then microwave. We couldn't clean it for a week.

Somehow get a bunsen burner. I made s'mores in a Chemistry class once by roasting a marshmallow over a bunsen burner. Of course, that was what our lab was that day.

That's like putting sweetener in your coffee instead of sugar.   :x

I actually remember doing this in my favorite diner one day.  My waitress watched me do this and somehow must have known I wouldn't like it.  the dialog before I even tried the coffee:
Her-"I'll get you another coffee"
me-'Why?"
her-"You'll see"*goes for coffee pot*
I took a sip, and realized that was the most revolting thing i've ever had.
she looked at me with that "I told you so" look
