Title: Difference between an alicorn and a winged unicorn.
Post by: SapphirePony on 2012 Sep 05, 16:25:06
It's just been bothering me, that most other bronies have been getting the two confused, I just want to help some more bronies to understand the difference. An alicorn is the term for the substance of a unicorn's horn, while a winged pegasus has many different names, such as alacorn, pegacorn, unisus, and a few others. Wikipedia will say otherwise.. but back a few months ago-a year it said that fans of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic got the two confused and had a link to the proper name... Feel free to decide to believe this or not...  :s

Edit: fixed the title  X3
Edit: Locking thread >.> It's been causing me to get hated just by stating a fact.

YES.
This is correct I'm afraid.
Unisus, Pegacorn, Winged Pegasus.

Would you want to be called what your horn is made of?

And yet the show's creators said Celestia is an alicorn.

http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Princess_Celestia

Quote"Friendship is Magic, part 1", My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna are called "unicorns" in this episode, and Luna is called a "Pegasus unicorn" on Hasbro's My Little Pony Facebook page. Despite this, storyboard artist Sabrina Alberghetti calls the princesses alicorns. The use of terms directly from the show supersedes other conventions.

Mhm...
Still saying Unisus, as it is still the more correct term.

And yet that is not true in the fandom as you can see.Since Alicorn is widely accepted than pegasus unicorn and the other names.

Since there is no real, true answer to this, I'm sticking with what I've used since I've heard of these Winged Unicorns.

And if you're going to say "It's Wikipedia, don't trust it, anyone can change it" that's exactly why you CAN trust it. That part of the page at least hasn't changed for months anyways, so yeah.

Okay then i will state that the show's creators could make it so that horns aren't made from alicorn and then name the princess's race alicorns.  ovO

They could, but they haven't, not have they?
Also, because it's unknown what alicorn is beyond what the horn is made of, you can't really say it's not alicorn unless you outright say "They're not unicorns or unisi, they're something else."
If we knew what alicorn was, then yeah, they could say that without any real argument.

oh, and for the record, i use alicorn mostly because the rest of the fandom uses it and it's the most familiar term to the laypony.  Even though it's not "technically correct" it's easier than trying to explain word by word what exactly I mean.

My little Pony Friendship is Magic:  The friendship express dictates that Celestia is the only pony with pegasus wings. And a unicorns horn.

Either way I say Alicorn/Pegacorn for simplicities sake. Though I imagine somewhere in mythology there is a correct term to be used.

Wrong. That tiny pony biology video is fanmade , and is completely false.Speaking in canon logic even lauren faust calls them alicorns.Infact there was never any official name for the unicorn horn substance.I suggest doing research before making an actual claim.

Well then you researched from wrong ends as Lauren faust refered to celestia , and Luna as the Alicorn sisters tons of times. The substance of unicorns horn was NEVER mentioned. Not in the show , and not by any writer/Lauren faust.

When I was a kid, I went with the first name for it I heard: pegacorn. I think I heard it on Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends. If not, it was another cartoon.

They were called unicorns in fosters home.
Also there are tons of times hasbro reffered to them as alicorns. The same goes with Lauren. Also it is 100% impossible for the word alicorn to mean unicorn horn substance. It was never mentioned in the show.It was never mentioned by hasbro. It was never mentioned by Lauren. It was never ever hinted. So it is impossible for it to be unicorn horn substance.

Uh...  Commonly called alicorns in the show, so just to avoid any mind explosions and/or ragefaces, can we just stick with that?

I think someone already pointed out that Celestia and Luna were called unicorns in the show, and Hasbro's Facebook page or something called Luna a pegasus unicorn.

Nonononono, I mean someone in either Foster's or another cartoon was talking about winged unicorns and wondered what they would be called or something, then said "How about pegacorn?"
