Personality: Can appear gruff and intimidating, due to his size, but is actually very sociable. He's pretty straightforward when expressing himself, although it doesn't happen often. He tackles obstacles head-on, whether they're physical or otherwise. He has little patience for ponies he considers eccentric or untrustworthy. He doesn't have the best business sense, he'll often make a bad deal or accept a lower payment for his skills as a blacksmith. When not in his workshop, he'll happily spend time with his daughter, Sweet Hoof. He also enjoys playing games with young foals, he thinks they're adorable.

Likes: A hard days work, outdoor activities, being praised for his weapon/armor smithing.
Hates: Thieves, snooty/selfish/dishonorable ponies, weapons and armor of poor quality
Strengths: Crafting high quality weapons and armor, especially swords. Great at manual labor, quick to defend other ponies who can't protect themselves
Weaknesses: A quick temper - especially when protecting family and friends, scared of large snakes, easily tricked by Illusory magic

The Name Silver Hoof is generic enough that it works for most ponys, and descriptive enough with context. Kudos.
The older age of 43 and being a Earth Pony are both rather interesting traits. You don't see many older ponys or earth ponys, so again, kudos.
The Color Pallet being darker tones, but not raw black and red or gooey green or other garish colors is nice. A good set of descriptor tones would do nicely, but that is a small detail.
The Cutie Mark is rather self explanatory, and that is nice. Too often it is some vague or symbolic. However, as you did state, the story has yet to be told, so I look forward to that.
His personality seems rather amiable. Fluttershys' friend Mr. Bear is similar to what comes to mind when reading it. Simple and unobtrusive. I think he is rather interesting. He also maintains that gentle lion aspect when you told about Sweet Hoof. However, you named Sweet Hoof, so it must be asked who she is, and who the Wife is.
Other than those, I like this character. Remarkably Underwhelming, and Delightful for it.

Actually, I do have an OC page for Sweet Hoof, plus another seperate OC page for another character of mine.
I just need to find the time to get all my OC's on one page, for simplicity's sake.
Also, I haven't delved too far into who exactly Sweet's mother is, since I only use Sweet and Silver in the Pascalo Beach RP.
As soon as I find the time, I shall flesh out her bio more and come up with a character design.
