It's playable on a Mac (99.8% sure it is), but I think the problem you're running into is the game not being available. x3
Don't worry, though! The game has very frequent stress-tests due to all of the fun stuff they add in between them all! Another one will occur before you know it! :D
Being that Legends of Equestria is an MMORPG it requires a server to connect and play. The game is only available on specific weekends, otherwise known as open server weekends, because the game is still under development.
From time to time when a new open server weekend is announced you can check it in the news (http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?board=2.0)section of the forums.
