I've been rather neutral to the whole thing as I watch the series more to enjoy a fun, funny and amazing, adventurous fairy tale than anything. I still admit the princess bit was a bit tacked on, but I think that was more a safeguard in-case the show bombed during season 2 (when season 3 was still being planned and on its way to being produced) so I'll forgive it as is. Plus, this was supposedly the first of a 3 part story arc so the beginning of season 4 will probably shed more light on some of the plotholes of this episode.

If it's any consolation though, as far as a character becoming a princess goes, this is one I like better. Compared to other princess stories where the princess is either born into the role and/or ends up marrying a "prince charming" to become a princess and is more often than not a damsel in distress. Twilight on the other hand was crowned a princess by virtue of her experience and having developed good leadership qualities needed to be a good ruler. While this may fall short of what Faust's original intent may or may not have been it is still a good long step above your average princess story.

Hate to break to it you guys, but MLP has always been a vessel to sell toys. Hasbro sells toys, that's what they do. Don't hate them for trying to make money.

Yesterday(I think) I saw a video with some of the interviews from the documentary( on the bonus material if I'm not mistaken). There Lauren said that she had envisioned for each pony to fulfil their dreams...Rarity gets a shop in Canterlot, Rainbow-becomes a Wonderbolt and Twilight-becoming Celestia's successor. I think they are on the right path on making the last one a reality. Though if I think about it, every one of those three is slowly becoming a reality.

Here's the video.

Yeah, all the artists and fans attempting to guilt others into feeling bad for disliking something- uncool.

The issue is not that she changed. I love it when characters develop and grow over time. It's the nature of her change. Her change into Princesshood. Which is blatantly Hasbro's marketing department trying to sell more plastic princess ponies.

It is undeniably the exact opposite of what Lauren Faust was trying to do. She was trying to make a show for girls that wasn't about being the pretty perfect princess. It was about real, likable, realized girl characters going on adventures and learning lessons about life and friendship along the way. Twilicorn is a smack in the face to that ideal if you ask me. And that sits badly with me and is always going to. Now, they could remedy it in S4, but it's still not something I'm happy about.

I'm usually the first to defend an episode that got mixed reviews. I'm usually optimistic about the creator's choices. I can see flaws in plenty of episodes, but never so much to leave such a bad taste in my mouth. I want to like this episode. I want to see the value in it like I have in the previous episodes. I want to be happy with it like so many other people are and celebrate another great season finale. But I'm not, I cant, and I'm not going to until maybe S4.

So, if someone has a rational or explanation for the Twilicorn that might help me understand why people are liking it, I'm all ears.

I feel the same. *Brohoof*

I don't want to go through a boring episode or out of character or bad story. :\

I'm somewhat already used to Princess Twi. It makes no difference. She's still her. I wonder what they've got in store for the last 2 parts. Magical Mystery Cure being Part 1.

The writers shove their foot in their mouth and retcon it by revealing that the coronation was just a glimpse into the future and Twilight is actually still in the zone with Celestia. She then wakes up a unicorn and continues her life looking forward to someday becoming a princess.

Well first they try to explain things in Castle Road, which makes the "Twilight as an Alicorn"-dislikers even madder.
And then they finish the story, annoyed by the fandom, with LET IT BE!.

@Sea-Foam: If you are still here and reading this, yes I know, I skipped 2 albums, I'm sorry.

Just because I liked this episode doesn't mean I like the new Twilight.

She is now more powerful than anyone else which is poor character development in a show that isn't meant to be dragon ball Z styled.
Sure you may say "Girls want to be pretty princesses." , but in life they all pass through the objective , and face reality. This show originally showed them growing together following ideals while still being logical , and gaining life lessons that will help a person grow. Girls would usually learn from that , but Twilight becoming that "Perfect powerful princess." makes it hard for that ideal to grow. Having everything good happen , and becoming the best there is is really boring which is why in shows like pokemon I like how the main character doesn't achieve full greatness unlike most people because it still gives a reason to continue. Imagine watching a show where everyone goes "I'm king of the world , and i'm stronger than everyone else I will face no problems , and I have completed my life goal." then why watch it? The main character has accomplished a life goal.

I still like the show , and the episode , but that does not mean I like Twilicorn.

I've watched it several times, and I think the first half of the episode is worth watching. It's rushed to the point of unprofessionalism, but that's because it's pretty much the entire story for the episode wedged into one half. Nothing else happens in the last 11 minutes but 4 minute transformation sequence. This is followed by seven whole minutes of nothing but paltry celebration. No plot, no explanation. Just a shiny coronation that literally has cherubic choirs singing the praises of Princess Twilight. Waste of time pomp and circumstance. No story, no exposition. Just everyone fawning over our new purple overlord, while she's sings about how happy she is and how everything will be perfectly fine now.

The Wandering Magus

meh.  I could watch it, or not.  Doesn't sound too interesting to me, but if you say the first half is all right, I could take a look.

Well it starts out with a billion shots of fan service , and has a rushed , but nice part in the middle , and ends kind of badly.
