Spoiler: Full Bio • show
Shadechaser is a normal-looking unicorn (at first glance) that is able, through constant trial and error, to act like a shadow, hiding in the shade of any object that blocks the light. She may never be seen as long as there is obvious light to see what is around, due to something happening while learning Shadow Walk.
Shadechaser is a loyal "follower" of "Nightmare Moon" and wishing to be just like her.
She kept fantasizing about what it would feel like to glide across the land as a shadow.
Her history is very vague to her. The only thing that is certain is that she occasionally joins a party looking like a normal unicorn. Some speculate that she has learned how to make wings out of magic, although they never see it happen, because of the darkness she lives in.

Shadechaser is a pony that adores the "shy" ponies (ex. Fluttershy), because she is one of them, yet she may stand out from the crowd at times. More on the reasons why Fluttershy, she seems very kind and willing to help those who seem injured or scared. For this reason, Shadechaser tries to defend Fluttershy. Shadechaser is a pony that admires the wildlife, and yet loves to go to the Everfree Forest to test her strength and endurance, similar to Rainbow Dash, who practices her talent constantly.
Spoiler: A diamond in the rough • show
At some point, Shadechaser started to hear beautiful music, and like a moth to the light, she searched for the source. When she found it, she saw a gray-brown mare with a darker brown mane that was playing the violin. When Shadechaser asked how she was able to make such beautiful music, she simply said that it was natural for her. Shadechaser was intrigued by this and 'made' her own instrument in the Everfree Forest. Through countless days, she kept pursuing this form of relaxation to find that she only wanted this for herself... then almost completely abandoning this talent. When she finally came back to it, she started playing her music to the hydra in the swamp part of the Everfree, who was soothed by the 'perfect' performance. The only time she feels it is necessary to use this talent is when the enemy, or threat, seems to be helpless, or enraged, in which to sooth them.

Spoiler: Reasons why Shadechaser is a resident of the Everfree Forest:  • show

1. She is an "odd" character, like Zecora.
2. The Everfree Forest is normally dark, and Shadechaser is in to that.
3. Not very many ponies go to the Everfree Forest.
4. After constant interaction with the forest, she has learned to talk with it. (in her own unique way)
Spoiler: Rumors • show
Some say that Shadechaser has a godly figure that she talks to and angers when people come to the Everfree Forest. Others speculate that she may be nearly as crazy for the forest as Pinkie Pie is to Parties.
No pony knows. Even Shadechaser doesn't know what she is talking to. All she knows is that she has the ability to communicate to the forest and sooth it. At one point she says Evree, referring to the Everfree forest.

Stealing:
If she could steal anything, it would be books.
The only way she could steal an object is if she could find a way to make it follow her in the shadow walk.
In which she has no knowledge of.
Yet sometimes she finds a book in the shadows.

Spoiler: Her History • show
Spoiler: Meeting Fluttershy • show
When Shadechaser was younger, she was almost always picked on. Struggling, she tried to seek sanctuary but to no avail. One seemingly mindless day... She found that there was no pony that even bothered to try to ruin her day. On that day, she saw this young mare fall from the sky. (Completely ignoring the other events happening in the sky.)
Waiting for a clear sign that this pony was not harmful, she approached this mare. She introduced herself and adores animals yet can't find it in herself to understand a word they say. "I am Shadechaser... I saw how you... helped those... critters... what is your name?"
After a few moments of persistence and silence, this mare says, "I-I... I am Fluttershy."
Being more of a listener at this time, the first time was all that was needed. Shadechaser replies, "Nice to meet you."
Eventually, Fluttershy learns to "trust" Shadechaser, and is more confident in talking with her "alone".

Spoiler: Art of the Shadow • show
Before meeting Fluttershy, Shadechaser found a book referring to "Nightmare Moon". Although very dusty, she opens this book. The first thing she read was something about Nightmare Moon's ability to turn in to a cloud of dark. Misinterpreting this, she closes the book and starts trying to be one with the dark... The first attempt was partially successful, in that she could temporary see in the dark areas like some night vision. The second attempt was sort of neutral... she could see the shadows as outlines. The Final attempt was more negative at first... yet successful... She felt small and out of place, but she started to think about if she could "harness" this ability... After meeting Fluttershy, she started to train more on the Shadow Walk "basics". With confidence, she tries to fight Timber Wolves. With a "mellow" face, she walks in to the face of danger, a.k.a. the Everfree Forest. After fighting countless number of Timber Wolves over the course of a year, she finally decides that the Everfree Forest may suit her best. Over time, she learned to trust the dark. At random times in the summer (before the "return of Nightmare Moon"), she found that not many ponies enjoy the dark like she does... Right before Nightmare Moon's return, Shadechaser learned how to see the dark more than the light, although it may have been her biggest mistake. Now she has to use a spell that grants blindness to see the light, for their light is her dark. When a normal pony is blind, they can only see darkness. This works in reverse on Shadechaser, due to the fact that her eyes have essentially been poisoned by the darkness. Shadechaser is one pony that is (seemingly) unaffected by the darkness, unlike Luna.

Spoiler: The Beginning • show
When she was just a filly, she was raised by an earth pony that was willing to help those in need. While she never learned why, she could always know that someone was there to look out for her. From the first year she could speak "properly", she kept asking, every other day, why would a unicorn, like herself, be with an earth pony. The answer that always came was that one must look past the physical traits and find the good in ponies. As the days went by, the earth pony kept finding more to help. Shadechaser was a little confused by this, when one of the ponies, they took in, was being mean to her. By this time she looked like she should have had her Cutie Mark. Weeks pass, as the pony gets consistently more mean. When the time came for her to find a place of her own, she went on a walk around town, looking at all of the possible places to feel at home. Deciding that in town was not really interesting, she tried to find other places. As she wondered around Equestria, she found a strange object fall from the sky. Marking the location mentally, she went to the scene. Whilst there, she saw the strange object fade from sight. Years pass and the though kept growing in her imagination. Finally she decides to try to figure out what the object was. Recalling the mental picture, she went to the spot and started to wander around this area. Eventually, she hit something that was invisible, then it reappeared. It looked like some out-of-the-ordinary sort-of object.

Her past in more detail.
Spoiler: The Oblivion • show
While living her 'first' life, she was living in this place called [glow=black,2,300]Oblivion[/glow]. Only the residents knew where it was, and only the residents could see the path back to it. Shadechaser was a young filly when she discovered a book that was entitled 'One Page Wonder'. The cover was similar to a blank cover yet it had the words in an outline. Most of the residents just past it thinking nothing of it. Before Shade picked it up she could not understand the concept of magic, even though she was a unicorn. After she picked this book up, (with her hoofs mind you...) many things ran through her mind, she felt more power surging through her body, and the whole of her ego was fractured by this one book. When she dropped the book, it vanished before it hit the ground. (not even three hoofs from the ground) Soon she was in her room, in a never-ending tower, practicing magic. (like she needs to practice) The only one that visited was her teacher, who was worried when Shade was constantly absent. The only thing that Shade did was 'shun' her. Eventually, Shade was more powerful than the 'Lord', yet more naive. (At this time Shade was almost as tall as Luna appeared to be during the Canterlot Wedding) The 'Lord' asked her if she wants more power, which she would love, then she needs to join him and she will gain more power than she could imagine. Eventually, the Lord requested Shade to go out and discover more of what the [glow=black,2,300]Oblivion[/glow] has to offer. When she came back from a 'long' journey all she had to report was that there was nothing else that this place has. The Lord replied saying that there must be more. Shade just agrees with this and goes out to find 'more'. Upon her second return, she reports that there is a portal leading to another world. The Lord replied telling Shade to take his best stallions (All earth ponies) and raid this new world. (Entrance to this world looked very similar to the Everfree Forest) When Shade enters this new world, she sees innocent creatures roaming about, causing the more sensitive part of her ego to take charge. Shade commands the party to stay near the portal and wait for her to return. As she is scouting she finds other ponies. Some look similar to her, (only judging coat color...) others not so much. When she returns to the party, she reports to them that she found residents of this world, and shares some details about them. One detail was that they seem to be interacting with one another.
Mike (an expert guard) states, "They must know we are here."
Kyle (a decorated guard) says, "That is impossible."
Shadechaser says, "We must not underestimate the enemy."
Luke (the 'weak' link) says, "We may need more stallions."
Kyle remarks, "You have room to talk."
Shadechaser says, "We just need the element of surprise. If they don't know where we will attack then they will not be as effective."
"That is right," Mike agreed.
Shade explains her strategy and tells them that they must find the leader and over take them. (Seems easy enough.) Soon, they started to look for a towering structure, but the closest thing they could find was this mountain that fit the detail. After a few days of being in this world, the stallions we losing hope. Moments after they lost most of their hope of conquering this land, Shade spots a mountain-side city that seems to hold royalty. By this point, the stallions where ready to head back, but upon hearing this news, they we perked up. (maybe) Then, Shade told them to that she would scout ahead using her shadow abilities. A moment later, Shade faded into the land, and went to scout a path to take. While looking for the path, she couldn't seem to find the royal chambers, yet after nearing the overhanging edge, she saw the tower that looked like a scouting tower. <Maybe that is it,> Shade thought as she got closer to it. Upon reaching what looks to be the entrance, she saw guards that seems well trained, and a large engraved door. She thought that this may be the royalty's hall, so she decided to slip under the large door. Upon entering, she could see large stained glass windows that seem to tell some sort of past in this world, along with a very high ceiling. When she looked to the back of this room, she saw the royalty
(Princess Celestia) sitting on the throne reading a note. Thinking it is about her party's presence, she decided to use her shadow sight, yet upon using it she could only see from the guard closest to the throne that was in the her sight. <What is this? I can't see through her shadow?> Shade thought, trying to get a better angle on the note. Soon, she had the perfect angle, but upon starting to read the note, it was discarded. (In some magical way.) Kind of frustrated by this, she recalls her shadow sight and heads back to the party. When reaching the raid group, she explains the situation and tells them to follow her lead. As soon as they enter this city, the residents start talking about the well armored stallions, and Shade caught one of them saying that 'she' was lucky to have them as bodyguards. Shade just rolls her eyes at this comment. Upon reaching the courtyard of the royal throne room, the guards seemed to have been on a break. <Wow. These guards are not what they appeared to be.> Shade remarked. They just entered the throne room like visitors, calm and collective, walking up seeming to respect her presence. As soon as they got close enough, (like five pony lengths) Shade, who looked innocent, said, "Attack!"
Luke, being the last one to charge, said, "Well, that was covert. :l "
When the first two Stallions charged at Celestia, she seemed to just get out of the way, allowing the two to just crash in to the throne. Shade instantly shadow jumped to behind Celestia, where there were shadows other than her own, jumping off of the wall she shadow jumped to and grabbed Celestia and took her down to the floor. Resisting to fall, Celestia just flaps her wings, looking like she is using no more effort than shortly before. <Oh, come on! Fall!> Shade takes Celestia into the shadows, and shortly after doing so, Celestia and Shadechaser seem to jump out of the shadows behind the throne. Both looking weakened, Celestia by the shadows, and Shade by the light Celestia shined while in the shadows. After what seemed to be five hours of a staring duel, Shade falls over. The stallions, aghast by this, run back to the [glow=black,2,300]Oblivion[/glow]. As they left, Celestia just stood there watching the stallions flee, shakes her head. After the leave her sight, she goes back to Shade, and uses the Elements of Harmony to "cure" Shade of the evil power that took over her mind. When the evil power subsided, Shade's size went back to the original state one second before she picked up that book. When the 'cleansing' was finished, Celestia took Shade to the nearest "Orphanage" so she could gain more knowledge on kindness.

Spoiler: Encounters of Discord • show
Shadechaser seems to be calm in the face of danger most, if not all, of the time. Her first encounter with Discord was when he roamed free merely a few years after learning the idea of staying with logic. One day, Shade was on a scheduled walk when she saw a pink cloud hovering near the entrance of Canterlot. She decided to investigate. When she got to the area of the cloud, she could see an ocean of them hovering over the land below. Shade thought this was not actually logic at work, so she started to head down the mountain. A guard stopped her asking why is she leaving the area of peace. She simply stated that she wanted to collect data then dashed down the slope. The guard tried to stop her but failed. When she hit the edge of the ocean of these pink clouds she noticed it was raining some brown liquid. Questioning the liquid, she took a sample in a shadow vial and sent it to the scientist of the shadows. The results of the tests came slow, so Shade decided to walk around the edge of the pink clouds, trying to find something that made logic apparent. After passing the Everfree Forest, she could feel something coming from it, yet she ignored it. As she passed a farm near the Everfree, she could help but to see the corn was popping. She just continues walking. After passing the tracks, the pink clouds seem to fade from sight. Shade looks around and sees some kind of rainbow formation in the direction of Canterlot. She decides to shadow jump in that direction. As she went there, she stayed in the shadows, looking at the scenery that she passes by, and ignores to ponies that inhabit the area. When she was near the source, she saw a stone statue of a creature that defies the logic of the other creatures that she has seen in her past. She could not explain the details of the creature, yet the outstanding feature was the overall shape being that similar to a snake.

More coming soon...

Spoiler: Her Encounters in the Everfree • show
Some things in the Everfree have only been seen by Shadechaser, due to her shadow vision. When she goes on random walks, she constantly walks past the ruins, going deeper in the Everfree Forest. One creature that she encounters is just mean. It resembles a blob, yet it has more of a stable structure, with a jaw that is only strong enough to partially dent a can, and several teeth that are mostly blunt. If this is disturbed it will "bite" the object that caused the disturbance, normally a branch that hangs too low. When Shade passes by this creature, it normally is disturbed by the hairs of her tail brushing against its face, causing it to just latch on to her tail. Other things are more noticeable to Shade, sometimes when she is one a walk she hears a loud screech, although your normal pony would run in fear of this, she just investigates the source of the screech. When she finds the source, it is normally on a tree branch, looking at her, as if she is going to attack. It is normally just like a stone gargoyle. If you don't move when you spot it, it appears to be just a sculpture made of stone with engravings of an unknown language. On a brighter day in the Everfree Forest, she could see that most of the trees have marks that seem like ones from the gargoyle, yet they seem to mean more than just some spell. Attempting to discover the true meaning of the symbols, she follows them. Eventually she finds a tower that seems to float above the floor of the forest, yet when she looks up to see the top, it just fades out of sight.

Somehow, Shade could see nothing other than this entity urging her to come. Eventually, she found her resistance weakening, and the entity took hold on her mind. Shade constantly feels the spark over what seems minutes to her, yet years beyond the veil of sleep. When she wakes from the sleep, she finds the life around her in the Everfree seems to have grown, setting a mood that is unsettling to Shade. The aura from the direction of Ponyville seems threatening, yet Shade wants to see what has come to be of the world. When she sees Ponyville, she is exposed to the true effect of a world of disharmony... a world of discord. The sight was mind-boggling to her, then she turned around and saw a path leading somewhere that was unknown to her. She examined the path, with her aura sight, and saw nothing threatening, so she followed it. At the end of the path, she saw a land hidden from the corruption of the cursed land outside.

To this day, her soul still has this corruption in one part of her mind, one personality in her mind.

Spoiler: Shadechaser's Mind and How it Works (vaguely) • show
Nothing can change her mind. Nothing can change her look on life in the vision that she constantly sees through. The only parts that change are within her own mind. Her mind is that to a system of axles and pulleys. One helps another lift. Certain ones pull less, and others lift with great force. Her mind translates in this way. When her mind is confronted with a problem, magic takes action through the shadows. Her mind never can comprehend why something happened by her mind, yet she did it. Things never happen on their own. Gravity keeps us falling to earth which in turn constantly falls to the sun. Shade's mind is always working, always trying to find more knowledge, always prepared for the worst, always looking around, while she is unaware of these stats, she remains the most in control in nearly every situation.

Once every century, the light tries to take the dark lord out of the shadows. In doing so, the dark lord is threatened, thus causing a war of contrasts. While Shadechaser was out scouting before her current life, she alerted the dark lord through the shadows that the light was overtaking this new world. While she was scouting, the war was ending. After reaching the battlefield, Shade noticed the battle was over, yet there still seemed to be a disturbance matching that of a war. Shade scanned the area, looking for any small object that seemed to carry the dark's hatred. After a minute or two, Shade noticed a small patch of darkness, yet all the ponies that frolicked in this meadow didn't notice this one patch, moments before she picked it up she observed the way it only darkened that one area around it. When she picked it up, she saw a glimpse of the future, but only for two seconds. She questioned this objects power and observed it more. When she turned it over it seemed to fade from the dark into the light, revealing the shard that the darkness crafted. Soon she returned to her scouting, not to speak of this to anypony, not even the dark lord.

You may want to include why she is so protective of Fluttershy, a trait I tend to discourage in OCs. I realize Fluttershy is best pony :P, but that in itself is not reason for a pony to like her and dislike anypony who threatens her. The whole idea of this causes your OC to be somewhat dependent on Flutteryshy's existence and interaction, which steals from individuality. There's a difference between dependency (bad) and chemistry (good) in this situation. You specifically and exclusively mention Fluttershy, which makes me believe this character has an infatuation with Fluttershy and is partial to her above other members of the cast. I'm not saying she isn't allowed to be protective of Fluttershy, but the way you have it appears as though she's playing favorites with Fluttershy, which is what causes dependency. Either don't specifically mention it or explain exactly why she acts like this when Fluttershy is concerned.

Unless it's supposed to be a secret, it would be very insightful if you told us why she likes to be a shadow and why she is a follower of Princess Luna. This is the objective of establishing a character's past: to make sense of her in the present. Yes, she likes shadows, Luna, and Fluttershy, but there's obviously reasons for these. It could be personal preference, but even personal preferences have reasons behind them. If you can answer the why, it really opens up the character and make her far less generic. Not saying she's generic, of course... but still tell us a little bit of what you can about her history.

As for her shadowmelding ability itself, I see no balance of power issues here. You've established that she practices this all the time, so I'm assuming she's rather skilled at it. It requires shade, so it's only situationally useful and can be countered with something as simple as a flashlight. However, I'm guessing its main use is to remain unseen to ponies who aren't looking for her, to which extent I see no conflict here.

Getting back to Fluttershy specifically, yes, history will be very important here. You need to tell us or at least hint at how these two have interacted in the past. Right now, it appears she's stalking Fluttershy like... a stalker, given her stealthy nature. I also wonder how Fluttershy feels about her as well, so give that some thought as well.

1) Her life revolves around being struck by lightning. Other than being struck by lightning and anything that occurs as a result of that, I know nothing of this character. I ask myself what she does when not being struck by lightning and cannot answer it beyond "Probably your normal pony stuff". The amount of focus on the lightning aspect of her completely takes the spotlight, allowing no other aspects of her life to shine, including her personality. Other than being scared of lightning, I can only read between the lines to figure out what sort of personality she might have.

2) The manner in which she learns about her talent is unrealistically convenient. She "carelessly wanders" into the Everfree and gets predictably surrounded by Timberwolves. She instinctively consumes the electricity in her body to form a "Lightning Crystal Shield" around her, which I'm assuming aids in her escape from the Timberwolves and the Everfree Forest. She is unable to figure out how to reproduce this never before seen phenomenon until some nameless pranksters decides to hit her with nothing less than a lightning bolt. This allows her to successfully make the shield, to which she makes the connection and earns her cutie mark. Don't you see how the events in your story seem to conspire to allow her to discover how her talent works?

3) Her talent deviates from the idea of pony talents. Most ponies' talents are everyday applicable things, like farming, baking, dancing, studying, and even to go as far as magic. Doesn't it seem a bit out of place to have a pony whose talent is making Lightning Crystal Shields? I can't even consider that a talent, since she pretty much inherited this skill and had it mastered before she even knew she had it. And unless you're in a war or something, this skill has no real application to everyday life... maybe if you wanted to be a... "Shock Absorber"? lol

>:/ *ahem* Anyways... you really need to diversify the character and I would even recommend changing the nature of her talent. Making shields would be great if you were a Final Fantasy pony, but it doesn't make sense in Equestria. You can still have it have something to do with electricity, but I would abandon the shield thing. If I had to suggest something, I would say give her the ability to... and I can't believe I'm saying this... "Ride the Lightning". This would require her to be extremely good at short bursts of speed... I mean light speed. Even that is a reach, but saying she can "borrow" the speed of lightning that strikes her for a split second might add an element of makeshift science to it.

Working on a new character, hopefully it is not a flop... (Everybody do the Flop!) with the critic.
