Imaginary Gemstone

Name: Imaginary Gem
Race: Unicorn
Gender: Stallion
Age: 26
Cutie mark: Tanzanite
Family: None

Wardrobe: Always carries glasses and satchel bag full of scrolls, ink and quill, chisel and hammer.

Appearance: He certainly doesn't considers himself the best looking, with his bright, white mane, dark indigo coat and emerald eyes. Frankly, he doesn't care much for his appearance which is why he might seem to be a little plain. He isn't very strong physically, certainly not athlete, but that's okay with him as he prefers quill rather than a sword.

Likes: gemstones, cherry pie, his work, writing stories, long and hot baths.

Dislikes: mine dust in his mane, cold weather, dark chocolate, diamond dogs, dragons.

Job: Research of gemstones and their magical properties.

Character talents: Gem has trained eye for spotting deficiencies in gemstones, he can also do house chores quite well, especially enjoying cooking.

Character deficiencies:
Astigmatism - He doesn't see perfectly on his right eye, thus always carries glasses as to not worsen it.
Afraid of being alone - borderline Eremophobia
Afraid of being used and betrayed

Personality: Gem is definitely one of those 'nice guy' types, who always helps others out and stays polite no matter the situation. However, he is very talkative which sometimes can be tiresome, especially if he starts talking about his job. Because of his past, he is very gentle and protective when it comes to foals or colts and would sacrifice himself for them without any question.

He is a little nerdy when it comes to his work and a bit anti-social, especially when it comes to mares. While usually calm and collected, talking with a mare can quickly make him grow red like an apple and stutter. However, upon overcoming the initial nervousness he will become very gentle and caring gentlecolt. Usually, Gem isn't one to do the first move when attempting dating because he is afraid of rejection.

Because of his kind personality, he was often taken advantage of and his trust was betrayed few more times than he would like so he is easily unsettled if he spots somepony behaving suspiciously towards him. He genuinely fears loneliness, not being able to talk with anypony and live through life without anypony noticing his existence.

He often dreams about his future, sometimes of making a breakthrough in his research and sometimes of starting a family which would put his fears at ease.

History: From the very first days he can remember, Gem grew up in Cantermore orphanage never knowing his parents, often wishing if anypony would adopt him. However, as days turned into months and finally into years, he watched others skip by through his life, never giving him a second glance. Leaving dreams aside, to avoid the pain of loneliness, he secluded himself and started to take care of younger orphans. Thus, he started helping out any way he could, with little hope of one day proving himself to be 'good enough to be adopted'.

One day, being teen years old, when he was returning to the orphanage, his eye caught a glint of small glasslike stone, laying around road pebbles. Coming closer, he inspected it, pondering how similar he felt to that tiny sparkling rock, that was standing out among others, without ever being noticed. Taking a liking to the stone, he took it with himself, genuinely curious what type it was.

Later on, he found out in the library that its name was Tanzanite and that it held magical properties. As he began to read even deeper into the geomancy books, an interest was sparked within him. Finding this little gem made him do something he had forgotten existed... dream and imagine a brighter future. This was the moment when his cutie mark was discovered and from that day on, he decided to study as hard as possible to become more noticed by others and to uncover hidden secrets of geomancy.

Growing up, more years passed, with Gem focusing most of his time on his newfound passion, however there was always this nagging feeling in the back of his head that he had nopony to share his dream with. Entering Cantermore university, some tried to socialize with him, mares and stallions alike although it quickly turned they were only interested in copying his homework.

His love life was similar, because even if he went as far as to date, mares seemed to be more interested in those 'bad stallions', determined to give them enough love to save them and make them into 'good ones'. Unfortunately for him, every single of them failed to notice that the one who  actually needed salvation was Gem himself, who even though he smiled outside, was slowly eaten by loneliness, withering away, feeling like a broken and unwanted tool that was tossed aside.

Reaching his current age just like that, Gem quickly noticed that Cantermore can't provide him with what he needs...a gem mine. Thus, for the sake of his research, he moved to Ponydale in hopes of finding new gems that he would be able to pick himself from the vein and not from the shop. Leaving Cantermore wasn't hard, as he didn't had anypony who would miss him anyway so at the same time, he started dreaming about a new start in life. Maybe in that small town, there would be something that would anchor him there, a friend ,a special somepony perhaps. Just enough to make him want to stay in one place.

Interesting bio and personality.

I wonder if he's going to be come part of Rarity's gem mining labor force?

Imaginary Gemstone

Thanks, I based him on subtle difference between dreams and goals... Dreams don't always come true while goals are achieved. Guess Gem is doing too much imagining and to little achieving. And yep, if it propels his research he would definitely help out in the mines  ^-^
