"Oh, wonderful!  Shall I be black then?"
Fan trots closer to the board.

Citrus watches over the beach, keeping an eye on everything with a specific scarf that was waterproof and also would not drag too much, so that she could rescue foals from the water quickly.  Her gaze shifted from the two chess playing ponies, or at least the ones near the chess board, then to Grey, and then at other ponies on the beach.

Fan trots to the black side, eager to see the stallions first move.
"My name is Fantaisie Casquette, but you may call me Fan if you wish."
Fantaisie gives a small bow.  Not too low, his hat might fall off.

I am Checkmate.  Checkmate made his first move slowly, as if he were unsure.

Grey found enough shells to make a beautiful necklace for her niece, as she was walking back to her house to put the somewhere safe she saw the two stallions playing a game of chess, she thought to herself "well, at least the one who looks like me is not playing alone anymore, but I do wish they were playing something I was familiar with, like Battleship"

Fan makes a counter move.
Grinning, he says "It's a right pleasure."
Eager to make some form of conversation with the monotone pony.  Noting Checkmate's mane and coat, Fan thinks of a topic.
"Those are interesting colors, though I should think they'd be offset rather well by a purple hue." Fan says, thinking back on the mare look-a-like.
In fact, he sees her noticing them now.

No.  Checkmate said emotionlessly, making yet another slow move.  Drawing attention to one's self is never a good idea.

"A wise decision, though rather tactically minded."
Fan notes Check's move, and makes another himself.

"Under different circumstances I'd agree with you, but being flashy has its benefits."
Fan lifts a pawn slightly off the board with his magic.
"If, by chance, this pawn had a more flamboyant appearance, in real combat he'd be more likely to be targeted than, say...My knight, for example."
Fan lowers the pawn back down to the board, in its proper place.
"If my strategy depended on my knight to be victorious, then a more noticeable pawn would come in useful."

Valid point.  However, you never allow the leaders to become flashy, or this happens.  Checkmate took advantage of a hole in the line to take Fan's queen almost immediately.  Check.

"That's where decoys would normally come in.  Unfortunately, chess isn't quite that complex."
Fan regards Check's move with a determined and perplexed expression.
"Even if a leader is trapped, and without a second in command, if he can make a quick escape-"
He moves his king up a square, leaving a rook to be in position to take the opposing piece.
"-He might as well have never been in the situation to begin with."

And sometimes, ponies react too much.  Checkmate moved a rook quickly.   Checkmate.  Incredibly, Checkmate had won while only losing two pieces!  Perhaps more incredibly, he didn't have any pride or happiness in his voice, just the same monotone voice he normally spoke with.

((It's his cutie mark, he doesn't lose basically.  More in depth, it's tactics, but chess is an easy way for him to express it.))

Citrus applauded for the chess pony that won, still on her chair.

An odd flicker of anger shades Fan's face as he hears the applause, but only for a moment, then it's gone.
Composure regained, Fan gives off a chuckle and says "That was quite a game!  It did its job beautifully, took my mind off the heat of this sun.  If only for a short time."
Fan thinks back on the last few moments spent with this stallion, and a vague look of suspicion appears on his face.
"Forgive my insolence, but you don't seem the type to frequent a beach.  You are intelligent, not outspoken, and a brilliant strategist.  None of these traits adds up to a visit to the beach.  Why are you really here?"

Citrus watches the stallion question the other stallion and considers intervening, but decides that she'll just let them continue for now.
