Lights dimmed as the timer reached zero.  The Headmaster looked out over the audience gravely.

"Academics and scholars, professors and students, fillies and gentlecolts, good evening."

Nova looked to the headmaster.

Cloudy snaps her attention to the stage again.

Nightmaress' eyes peeked out from under her hat at the headmaster.

His voice was serious, but there was the hint of a smile on his face as he surveyed the massive auditorium.

"I am Emerald Crescent, Headmaster of this Royal Academy of Magic.  I welcome you all to a new year at this Academy."

((cue cheers and applause))

Cloudy just continues staring silently. She is eagerly waiting on Emerald Crescent's speech.

Nightmaress pulled her hat over her eyes and kept her cool smile about her.

"Whether graduate or newcomer, you come here as the best of the best.  Each and every one of you were selected based on your academic performance and talent.  Every one of you, regardless of whether you were aware of it, passed through many tests and trials to come here.  We here at the Royal Academy would like to congratulate you for your achievement."

He looked out at the students and faculty with a shrewd eye.

"But do not think that your trials are over.  Entering was only the start of the race.  By passing through the doors of the university, by wearing the robes of academics, each of you have become Royal Academy competitors.  Only a small fraction of the best students and teachers of Equestria ever make it to this ceremony.  Only a small fraction of that will last to the end."

Behind him, the illusions flickered to images of the greatest unicorns of Equestrian history, from Starswirl the Bearded to Twilight Sparkle, the Princess's Student.

"But if you succeed in completing the path laid out before you... you will truly be deemed the BEST of the best."
