Title: Copyrights and Copies
Post by: blobking156 on 2014 Jun 17, 20:56:33
So, this is mostly in general, but i see complaints mostly from this fandom.
First off, i'd like to talk about copyrights. A copyright, at least my definition is "A legal ownership and domain over a word, phrase, or idea." What this means is that you can do whatever you want with it, it's yours. I mean, people would get angr, if you, well, maybe turned a kids show int o a very adult show. Then there'd be lawsuits, and outraged parents, and traumatized children. If somebody else is making money off of your copyright, some CROs [this is what i'll call copywright owners] might get angry, and sue, or not ask for money in a simple cease and desist order. But, due to the fact that it's hard to pinpoint when someone is making money off your copyright, CROs might do some things that confuse or anger their fans.
Take for example, Hasbro copyrighting the term "Brony." It could be to pinpoint those making money off of copyrights, or it might be Hasbro claiming a popular term associated with a show they produce. Keep  in mind that Hasbro is not one person, and some people might not have knowledge of the fanbase. Not saying none of them do, that is highly improbable, but you get my point.
The following topic is "copying" and "Knockoffs." What i am talking about is when somebody finds something successful, so they make their own, while staying within copyright laws. there are two kinds of this in my opinion. "Creative" and "economic." Creative is when someone is inspired by something, or is expanding on the universe of said "something." Fan-works are classified in this, And liscensed products like video games (LEGO video games, Star wars books, or official merchandise [but very loosely.]) These are usually accepted. On the other hand, "Economic," is where something is re-created solely to get money and feed off of people who like popular media. "Knockoffs" are big in this category. These are often labeled as "fails" in some cases, and in others, they're made fun of. Rarely are they accepted.

this was a rant essay conglomeration of thoughts into a forum topic.

Wouldn't licensed products like video games fall under Economic too? I mean even Hasbro has that one pony game of theirs that squeezes money out of people.

I'm sure LoE falls under creative though seeing as how nobody's making money off of this :3

Yes, there can be some overlap, but Economiic is mostly non-liscenced  merchandise, that's not fan made.
