Anyone know one? I'm thinking of ubuntu studio. Is that user friendly or is it a complicated mess?

I don't know anything about animation programs, but I think Flash might be okay... Unless you mean 3D animation.

10 years ago when I actually did animation I used flash....it was all I knew back then.  The interface was easy enough for me to figure out and there are alot of user friendly tutorials out there for it

I'm not sure what ubuntu studio is...

Try out Pencil
http://www.pencil-animation.org/
It is a great traditional animation program

If you want to go into 3d try blender
