Title: Childhood "roadblocks" in games
Post by: Rikaria on 2015 Mar 15, 14:10:27
AKA "What was something/were some things that stopped you from playing/progressing through a game/games back when you were a kid but are able to clear through it now?" A few of mine were:

I wanted to make this thread because nostalgia hit me after reading and hearing (via a presentation yesterday as of this post) about ex-Rare members wanting to make a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie (more info here (http://forum.legendsofequestria.com/index.php?topic=14228.0)), and strangely enough, what I just mentioned came to mind first; I'm also curious if anyone else had their own "roadblocks". So yeah... what's yours? (Mind you, it doesn't have to be Nintendo-only games.)

For me it was every Megaman X game basically when I was a kid. For X4 it was Sigma having 3 forms the 2nd one with 3 extra lifebars.

Megaman Legends 1 Juno when I was a kid. I wasn't good at dodging crazy laser attacks. Strangely I usually did well on RPG's like FF7 and FF8. Paper Mario though Huff N Puff was my worst nightmare he defeated me for so long.

So I played the Original PC Spider-Man game back in the day. One of my first proper video games  ^-^ And so, there was a level where Spidey was running from the Law. And at one point, he comes to this incredibly tall building, with an even taller cage of construction beams on top of it.

What you had to do was climb up to the top, and continue running from the police, but I didn't know that for a while. So I'd just play from the beginning to that point, and repeat.

After I discovered what you had to do, I went on to explore the 80% of the game I was missing  lol

The piano puzzle from the first silent Hill for the ps1, when I was younger didn't know how to complete that part, I picked that same past a few months ago and found that the order of the notes was hidden in a poem in the same room  :P

Well that's a good question. well mine is based on these games.

original Legend of Zelda (NES) - relied on sword beams too much and couldn't reach level 1 dungeon without getting hit. The other part of this was pulling off a hero's mode challenge (no ring mode) which I was doing this challenge till I got stuck in level 5 and wiped out to blue darknuts.

Legend of Zelda: OoT (N64) - I got stuck on ganon without a blue or green potion after running low on MP and my bottles were filled with faeries so had to start over from the beginning to be more prepared than usual.

Legend of Zelda: ALttP (SNES) - I probably didn't get further inside the castle so i've been avoiding the enemies and got wiped out so many times by enemies and numerous falls.

Mega Man 3 (NES) - Probably the mega man 2 robot masters that got me best here.

Mega Man 5 (NES) - the only robot masters I had a hard time dealing with was crystal man and wave man.

Mega Man 2 (NES) - Quick man was the last robot master I had to deal with, but Hated the stage and never cleared it.

Oh man, I didn't know there was an actual term for this sort of thing! I know I had a ton of these as a kid!
In particular, I remember Carnival Night Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, there was this big barrel thing that you had to bounce on to progress through the zone. For the longest time I tried jumping on it to get it to bounce, but to no avail, but turns out you just had to press up and down on the D pad to make it move. Took me a good 10-15 years to figure that out!

^ This. So much this. All my frustration when finding out that day... just... argh >:O

And there isn't really a term for it. "Roadblock" was just the first thing that came to mind.

Some scooby doo game where Shaggy and one or two others are locked in a basement. It was for either the Gameboy or Gameboy Color, and i eventually sold it at a yard sale for somewhere between 35 and 50 dollars. It was weird to see a game like that being sold for that much, especially with crayon drawings on the label... Oh well.

Well, for starters, I never completed every party in Hello Kitty's Happy Party Pals for the Gameboy Advanced, and I never got through Super Mario World for SNES.  :c

And I never finished those games now, to. lol lol

I have a few.

Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Kirby 64's Boss Battles.

I still have yet to finish Super Mario Bros. 3. Kirby 64's boss battles is quite tedious and takes patience.

I never even made it to the true final boss on Kirby 64. I need to replay that game again someday.

I'm sure Sephiroth was a roadblock for many kids. I couldn't get past him in KH2 until I was older. Granted he's an optional boss but without beating him you could never finish Cloud's quest.  >:/

I only had the 2nd level of reflect sadly.  ovO I was also only lvl 40 so partially it was my fault for not leveling.
