Both of these characters are siblings. Ichiro Hideo Hayashi is the first born of their household, and Chiyo Hana Hayashi is the second born.

Hayashi - Meaning Forest. A common surname.
Chiyo- Meaning Eternal.  Hana- Meaning Flower.
Ichiro- Meaning First Son  Hideo- Meaning Excellent, Excellent Man

Kin: Akio Hideaki Hyashi ((Father)), Suzume Kotone Hyashi ((Mother, prior surname 'Nishimura')), Ryota Ryuu Hyashi ((grandfather)), Momo Naomi Hyashi ((grandmother, prior surname 'Yamauchi')), multiple cousins and extended family. Will mention names later if I can.

Both of these characters are Unicorns. Their family is middle class, so they do not demand a high amount of respect and are not considered below other equines. However, the family standards of bringing up their children are quite high nonetheless. Thus, Ichiro is a respectful and rather dominating character. However, many would view him as above the crowd or of a higher standard. He is quite venerated in their village, and often mistaken for noble blood due to his appearance and behavior. He walks with his head held high and a calm, confident expression. Many a mare have become enchanted by this and he is considered the "Prince" of their Magic school. This stallion specializes in illusion spells and those of manipulation. However, he does not openly display these. Rather, he plays out his light magic to add tot hat rather princely charm that the other students seem to find within him.

Weakness is something he will never openly display in front of any equine. His pride and honor will not allow it. Even when he is threatened with danger, he comes off as a rather imposing if not intimidating adversary to face. Ichiro shows no mercy to anyone or anything that has become a danger to him, or his sister. It would be quite surprising to see him display this though. For her safety as much as his own peace of mind, his attitude outwardly towards her is either uncaring or a lack of interest. He knows this makes her feel rather lonely, but he will protect her. Even if that means she will never know it, or him. Should any creature cause problems for his little sister though, he will torment them and cause misery for their family in secret.  Not in person of course- through other equines. Though it becomes quite clear he will have nothing but hatred for you if he should look your way with a rather eerie glare in his eyes.

Chiyo is not quite as reserved as her brother when it comes to other creatures. Rather, she speaks when spoken to and has a little innocent charm about her. She is polite, but not to the point of kissing up to someone. It is not easy to get her to become aggressive though. She may even seem clueless to your attempts, and end up confusing you more than reacting. However, if you attempt to harm her or ask her to do something she has already implied she will not do, the mare will either ignore you and leave or become rather annoyed. She is not fond of those who take her advice on deaf ears.
Since she was a filly, Chiyo has always looked up to her older brother for guidance. Not to the point of being clingy, but rather... looking for his approval. Something to say he knew she existed. Something to say that he loved his sister. And though there have been a few times where he would glance her way, he does not seem very interested in her progress nor her abilities. It was not always such a distanced relationship- once upon a time, they had been inseparable. But around her older brother's teenage years, he had started to drift farther and farther away from her for some unknown reason. Since then, Chiyo has felt rather lonely and seeks out friendship. She will not force someone to be her friend or run up and start asking questions or their name. Rather, if they show interest or do not take her presence in a bad way, she will attempt to get closer to them. Although, if they did cause problems for her they would come back apologizing in fear the next day. She was not sure why, and does not suspect her brother to have anything to do with it. He barely notices her... why would he confront strangers hassling her?
Chiyo specializes in natural Magic, and is fond of nature in all of its beauty. She much prefers relaxing in a garden to socializing or reading a book.

Ichiro's cutie mark is of a puppet suspended by strings.
Chiyo's cutie mark is a sakura flower's blossom.

Both characters live in the village of Honoka ((harmony)). It is an oriental village with multiple schools of magic, flight, combat, and standard studies. Most residents attend these school in ranks of elementary to college. Despite the fact that this place is known as a village, it is more often than not seen as very large to be considered such a word. With many schools, shops, and homes, it is considered one of many ideal villages on its island.  The island itself is quite large, known simply as "Daichi".

Ichiro:

Chiyo:

And yes, this is heavily Japanese inspired.

Here is the island. As you can see, smaller islands surround it with differently colored territories. These territories are governed differently depending on the color I gave them, but it's not done yet. Currently, these characters live in the green section at the upper right hand corner of the map.

This family is known for their magical capabilities and exceptional offspring, though there have been few instances of earth pony births. This is not particularly frowned upon, but it is not seen as special either. Usually, family members are born with hues of red, pink, dark crimson, velvet, brick, turquoise ((rarely)), or ebony ((rarely)). It is more common to find faded mixtures of these colors in their manes and fur. They also have exposed hooves, meaning that unlike most pony families you will see their hooves as a different color than their legs. Many ponies mistake these for shoes.
males are born with larger horns and longer manes than females. Within their family history it is only the female side that has ever been born as an earth pony on rare occasions. Females also tend to be lighter in color than males, and have paler eyes.
I may or may not finish this or draw what the place looks like. Tired. Murr.
