I view it as myself being the actor for each of my characters.
I view it as narrating a story in third person.
As most of my OCs have something from me, I view it myself being the actor of my characters.
Also, couldn't this have a poll or something?
I view it as a personal bonding experience with my friends, and also kinda like playing with dolls ^-^
per request a poll has been added
I see it as narrating in the 3rd person as well as a bonding experience. It can be fun to make a story with others.

i see it like that as well as me being the actor for my characters
I third-person. I just think I add more to it that way.
It's a great way to pass the time while bonding with my friends. Assuming the role of my character allows me to really feel it out more, and as such, my reactions will be more believable than if I'm just narrating it, especially when my main OC has a similar thought pattern and personality to myself. It also forces me to build my ocs up instead of leaving them stagnant, boring, and unused.
I wanted to say as the character... :P
I view it as being the characters themselves, though I often idealize them a bit or blow one aspect or another of myself out of proportion, most often I just make them badasses though, kinda funny now that I think about it.
I view it as reading a good book where you write one chapter each.
I'm kind of a mixture of 3rd person narration and acting as the character.
Mainly an actor playing a role. I would say that there is narration in what you do, but unless you become the part and think yourself how you would act (or how that role would act), then it could be just a group of random stories about "This pony" or "That adventure."
It's improvised storytelling, but you only control your side of events in that story (unless permission granted by other participants to involve them). That's why I see it more of you becoming the role and reACTing to other posts rather than you taking control of the entire story.
It's still quite a tussle between these two ideals in RP - blurry lines between them.
true that
I would have to say as a way to bond with friends, primarily, but also as a way to allow my inner self come out and play, I do not play so much as an Actor playing a role, I play more as an extension of who I am, but in a different form, so in a way, it is sort of seeing things through the eyes of a shape shifter, shifting into different forms to play out what I am unable to do in life, thus to be the Pegasus, or the Unicorn, to try and feel what it is to be that, and still put myself into the role, I suppose the best way to describe this would be that I suspend my belief of being behind a screen acting, and try being the creature on the screen living with friends and having a good time.
I am a very imaginative person, and a philosopher, I am Poetry Motion :)
So, here is a question: am I playing Poetry Motion, or is Poetry Motion playing me? think and chew, think and chew.
So to roleplay is to play a role. But then i get there and things and tight and stuffy and not me and I freeze and I gotta do this thing to fit this place and lets be honest it wouldn't be roleplay if I was playing myself. Nervousness more freezing followed by me telling a story at my storied self inside the story that is roleplay and its all STORYCEPTION!!!
Then I calm down and realize that I already have such an unusual way of talking that nobody takes me seriously to begin with. So I play me and everyone is all "mm mmm MMMMMM!!! darn gurl you gots such a good kharacter." and I'm all "dood I wasn't rollin' with no play, ya dig?" and wind up becoming queen of the rp'in community in my sector.
Be yourself. You're normally goofey enough to pass as 2-3 other people. Just avoid using terms from the world you currently inhabit called "real" and never roleplay because those ponies are dead serious and will rip you a new one if you said somebody instead of somepony.
I roleplay with my ocs as if i were them, especially with my main sona, since she's basically me
