my theory: the Elements need 6 to work properly, Celly and Luna were only two, so the sealing of Discord was imperfect, and a fragment, the seed of discord that would grow into a literal Nightmare, was sown between the Sisters.

With their passing, Luna finally snapped and gave into anger and darkness to become nightmare moon

How about centaurs waging war againts ponies ,because centaurs think they are the superior horses because they are smarter ,and have more advanced weaponry?
