I read the article, the 2DS was made to be more accessible.
You see the 3D features of the 3DS limit the console to older children but the 2DS does not because it does NOT have 3D.
The 2DS ALSO plays ordinary DS games like Zelda Spirit Tracks and all that.

Apparently, the Nintendo 2DS is also meant for children.

They feel that hinges tend to be a weak spot that can break more easily than the rest of the handheld, so they did away with hinges to make it sturdier for children to use.

And yes, they took away the 3D to make it cheaper.

I still don't like it, but thankfully, I don't have to buy it. I've had a 3DS for a good long while now, and even though I rarely ever use the 3D, I still love it. It's awesome.

Also, when you refer to any kind of DS, you don't have to say Nintendo. Nobody says Nintendo Wii U or Nintendo Gameboy Advance etc.

Back in my day, Nintendo handhelds didn't have hinges. But at least I don't need to have a 2DS to play 2DS specific games, because if I did oh gosh I'd be in tears, that thing is like a brick compared to my older non-hinged handhelds.

Like I said before, the hinges were deemed to be a weak point that could break more easily than the rest of the handheld, and since the 2DS is more geared toward children, they didn't want it to be easily breakable. I guess they didn't think about the fact that the screens are permanently exposed this way, and children are far less careful than teens and adults. I've known a child to leave game discs lying shiny side down on the floor. They often have no sense of fragility.
