Pony Off-Topic / Re: Changelings

Well, where do the three tribes come from? Why are they different, but the same species?

When that is answered, we can start thinking about the changelings.

Unless you are thinking they are simply cursed ponies.

I have thought a lot about this question, actually.

Rarity is certainly not average by any sense of the word, but she can give us something.

Sweetie Belle's difficulties with learning magic can also give a general idea that all unicorns are at least taught and expected to learn basic levitation.

It all comes down to cutie marks, I think. Rarity's cutie mark demands quite a bit of precision, as well as the manipulation of lots of smaller objects. The common opinion is that she cannot lift as much weight as Twilight, but she can do a lot more with less.

Rarity isn't seen casting any other spells, but her cutie mark does not require her to.

In general, I think unicorns know levitation, one or two spells related to their talent, and some academics might know one or two additional spells that differ from their talent, but with no real power behind either of them.

And guards, with their talents, would have one or two combat spells. Usually related to their cutie mark, of course, but with study, I believe all guards could at least manage a stun spell. (Or equivalent.)

I guess I never technically stopped watching, but...

I lost the motivation to actually keep up with episodes around the beginning of Season 5.

Yet I have not lost any interest in the fandom itself, more specifically Fimfiction. Even if I wasn't a writer myself, I would have plenty of pony content, and good pony content at that.

Sometimes I might marathon the episodes that looked kinda interesting. Especially premieres and finales. Those give me some nice material.

But I treat the show as basically another fanfiction. Good animation, and hit-and-miss storytelling with a version of the characters I love.

Yeah... while it was nice to have the characters develop in the show, the Mane 6 have developed into blandness. Their continued faults aren't shown, even just the minor ones that come with their individual personalities.

That's why some of the best fanfictions are either set just before or just after the end of Season 3, depending on subject matter. Characters still had... character.

And the show took itself more seriously. It took the characters seriously, it took the canon seriously... just look at The Crystalling. That had the opportunity to develop alicorn canon, yet... it just destroyed it's OWN canon. And it is only amusing for the "princess with thousands of years of experience" to be shocked if it didn't happen every single big event that happened.

Seriously. It was hilarious for Celestia to look on in blank shock when Discord stole the elements, since she had never cracked before. But it was just annoying for both of them to have no idea how Flurry Heart was a thing.

Yet that isn't to say the show no longer has value.

For the movie (no actual spoilers here), I loved the animation, but it made everypony look sluggish, and there were so many problems with the plot, the gag character (you know who I mean), merchandising, and jarring 3-D models, where I don't actually believe I watched it to completion.

There probably was something to do with the fact that I was hearing identical voices with very different ponies, at least visually.

Anyway, rant over.

TL;DR - I love this community, and I might watch the show occasionally, but those two statements are no longer connected with any sort of firmness. I hope that G5 happens soon, and that it lives up to the G4 ponies. I don't want this show run so far into the ground that no-one wants to pick it up again.

With the advent of the holiday update, I noticed that you have quite the fun ice implementation going on there in the rivers.

While seasonal effects are pretty fun in general, it has come to my attention that the Crystal Kingdom is still in the Frozen North, even with in-game canon.

Also, in the quest "Crystal Inquisition," it is quite clear that the ice is getting close to the city limits itself.

Now that ice and snow textures definitely do exist, it would be great for the map to reflect the weather effects that are supposed to be there in game canon.

Of course, as always, I understand that other priorities may come first, but it would definitely help with immersion.

...I really need to keep up with things.

Oh well, I'm a lot less busy now, so I can spend more time with LoE.

Finally, though. Something I have experience with. Application sent.

(I've been wanting to help for a long while.)

Well, really, I would be perfectly fine with learning Unity, but... while Unity games will work on Linux, the actual editor won't.
46
Hmmm... not sure if this is the place for suggestions, but I just noticed how the Fyre Flye Armor has been kinda neglected as an armor type.

Well, there is a possibility that this is intentional, but as one of the coolest looking armors, I was hoping that it would eventually have a function.

(Of course I understand exactly how much you guys have to work on currently, but I was just making sure it was even a consideration.)

Does anypony know if there is going to be an OSW ?

Unfortunately, there will no longer be any more OSWs until release. (At least, I'm 98% sure of this.)

However, there should be another wave of applications for the Limited Access Release (LAR) soon. This is for bug testing before the final release, which is a lot more in sight than it was before, but it's not exactly going to be "soon." I can't say much, but there's still a lot to work on.

If you want to help out and have fun while doing it, but can't actually work for LoE, then you should sign up for the next wave of the LAR.

When is this next wave? I don't really know. The only date I can get is "soon," which is as descriptive a word as when Aslan uses it in the Narnia series.

Still, it's something to look out for. Probably the same kind of waiting as when we used to wait for OSWs.

Oh, does that mean that LoE will be playable 27th - 29th?  :0

Unfortunately, no. The full release still isn't for a while yet.

However, if you want to play the game, and help out at the same time, but can't work for LoE directly, there should be another wave of applications for the Limited Access Release coming "soon."

And no, I don't know when "soon" is, either.

Wow... I missed this, probably since it wasn't in the LAR section of the forum. I really need to stop assuming that there won't be any news other than what is mentioned there.

Anyway, I can confirm that Legends of Sockquestria works on Linux, if you have Wine.

No, not the drink. The program that lets you use Windows programs with some success.

Best game ever. Loved the music, especially. Great message, and I look forward to the sequel.  ovO

Hmm... I don't know if this will ever be a thing, but are you going to ever do translations for LoE (I know someone else mentioned this as well)?

I know MLP is kind of a big thing in Germany, and while I am not a native speaker, I have lived there for 4 years, and I know a lot more about connotation and cultural nuances that might escape those who only studied the language itself.

I am already a LAR tester, and I am currently in college, but something like this is a task that would be a lot easier to help out with than some of the other jobs.

I have no idea if I got in or not. I forgot to change my email since I changed the name servers of my past email.  ono :c I guess I will have to wait for another chance.

Don't worry, if you get in, you will see an additional, exclusive forum category, if you missed the email.

(I missed mine, since I typed in my email wrong on the forums here.)

There will be other chances. And I thought the next wave was supposed to be fairly soon. I just don't know exactly when.
51
Sigh...

There is absolutely no way I will be able to attend any convention for, like, three or four more years until I am out of college.

And maybe more if I want to actually be able to afford it.

why they are interested in my personality? they should be interested in the glitches and errors i found in game not in me.

Well, first of all, they would be working with you for many months, and they do not want to work with a jerk.

Additionally, they want to see how dedicated you are to the project, perhaps close to how much they are.

They don't want people that just want to play the game early, no matter their training. They want someone dedicated to their cause and someone willing to work for free.

They want to know you for the same reason that prospective employers want to get to know you before they hire you, instead of just hiring you based on your resume. The only difference here is that it is not a paying job.

should i tell them my address how much i earn show them my credit card number or what?

No, of course not. They are far more interested in your personality, how much time you are able to put into the game, and how much experience you have with testing.

O: But they dont know me.

The application was designed so they would be able to get to know you based on what you wrote. So the more personality and effort you put in the application, the more they can make an informed decision.

Will they still host contests for designing items? I'm more of an idea-type person anyway.

Maybe in the future, but I highly doubt they will be doing something like that anytime soon.

New material will probably only be added after everything else is stable.

I didn't get in ...
I see you're all saying there'll be second chances and the full release is not far away, but I don't really want to "play" the game. I just want to search for bugs, try to break the game, write reports, you know, that's the sort of thing I really enjoy. And there's a very narrow window of time where I can actually do that. So I'm still very sad
:(

Well, December 12th is the next application, so you still have a chance for that. Just maybe not the first wave of it.

I believe that this is correct.

Yes it can be frustrating. But as he said. One of the things they were mainly looking for were previous experience in beta testing games in which I've beta tested games before. Have been off and on for years since 2010.

Also, computer specs. Even though I highly doubt that the game requires alot of processing power from your CPU or graphic intensity on loading textures would depend on both GPU and CPU. They'd still prefer having a PC that have decent specs I guess?

Some people have also been following this project for years and some of those I'd imagine were chosen because of their dedication in helping the games improvement and help the developers and programmers to make sure the game is running smoothly using Unity 3D's C++ coding system which would be displayed if there was a SCRIPT error in the game which I've found during the last OSW back in July of this year. That's something we don't have access to. But it would be displayed if there was such error. Scripts are a difficult task to write due to it being performed in computer language which takes a mighty amount of skill and patience to do such thing.

Great. I'm rambling again. Anyway, don't worry solarflare, it's not the end of the world. I hope to see you in game when the game is fully released or unless there actually will be a 2nd wave of applications for LAR which there may or may not be. Just wait and see friend!  ^-^

Just remember, the game is in testing stages before final release which could be a few months away. Don't go, just stay tuned for news okay?

I got official confirmation (I forgot from whom) that the next wave's applications will be released on the 12th.

It's an unofficial rule that "odd numbers are more aesthetically pleasing" design-wise. (They "look pretty" for some reason. Don't ask me what the science behind it is, I'm sure it's math-related though)

Actually, it is a math-related thing!

Well, not necessarily all even numbers.

It's actually a Fibonacci thing. Basically all numbers found in nature are in the Fibonacci Sequence. 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc. As you can see, the vast majority of those low numbers are odd. But you will occasionally see an 8-petal flower. And a lot of things have 2-fold symmetry.

But that is a good guideline for creating anything you want to look "natural".

Also, if you want to design proportions, using the Golden Rectangle (another thing related to the Fibonacci Sequence) is a good idea.

Already checked the home page about 50 times lol. Nothing there. Ah well, hooves crossed for next time! (If they do another batch.)

Yes, the next application comes out this Monday, December 12th.

Wow...I sent in TWO applications for the Limited access release and I STILL didnt get accepted??? O.O I am absolutely disgusted and bitterly dissapointed. I might as well just give up waiting for/ playing the game altogether. I will not wait for another couple of months for the game to come out...

Seriously...I thought it was literally first come, first serve...

Not necessarily. While sending in a prompt application tells them you are serious about the game, they were more interested in what sort of computer and operating system you had, as well as your previous experience in testing games. The primary purpose of this first wave is to get all the bugs found and fixed before release.

And anyway, another application for the second wave is coming out this Monday, the 12th, which should be slightly less exclusive.

Still, the primary purpose is bug fixing, so if you are a casual player, it is probably best to wait until the final release.

Or you can still apply for that chance of getting in.
