Thank you. The waffling on about rubbish is the easy part. Sourcing everything and then conducting a literature review on each source is going to be the painful part.

did you learn programming by yourself as a hobby?  did you ever take formal classes?

Both! I'm finishing a degree in Web Development at the moment.
congratulations! how long did that take you?

I should have graduated 3 years ago, but ill health scuppered that plan. I've been studying since 2007.
well, I'm glad your health has improved, and that you can continue now x3

Thank you! Doesn't detract from the fact that I really hate writing dissertations.

I could never wrap my head around PHP, which makes being a site admin kinda difficult at times...

Perhaps I should read into it a bit more it just looks really complicated compared to HTML/CSS and VB

At it's most basic PHP is blissfully easy.

Initially I started off using server side includes (SSI):
<?php include("a-file.php");?>

It's a great way to use repeating content across an entire site - such as menus and the like.

what programming language do you most often deal with?  which one do you prefer?

Programming languages: PHP is the one that I deal with almost exclusively. I have a preference for it also - I can generally deal with PHP.

If we count markup as well, then it's CSS; especially when I've developing an adaptive site.

ever encountered a bug you couldn't fix?

Much more often than I'd like.

what's the strangest bug you've ever fixed?

The strangest? That's a legitimately tough call actually. Most of the bugs I need to fix are pretty dull affairs - things like an end-of-line missing or an unclosed HTML tag. Most of the really weird things come from broken CSS.

greetings, and welcome, Mr. Richard!  I'm glad to see you here.  What do you do for a living when not fixing bugs or making music?

I'm a professional web developer! http://www.latech.co.uk/ So even when I'm not fixing bugs (or causing them), I'm fixing bugs (or causing them). If I'd have charged LoE for my services so far the folks would have gotten a bill for around £1000 or so (as a guestimate). But I haven't, because I'm nice like that.
((psst: there's an error code at the bottom!
Code Select
Warning: date() [function.date]: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'America/Los_Angeles' for 'PDT/-7.0/DST' instead in /home/latech3/public_html/inc/footer.php on line 12
))

nice :]  private developer, or part of a bigger company?

Most odd - thanks for the heads up. I'm self employed.

Haven't you been around for a long time already?  :o Being on the IRC chat and all.

Anyway, welcome I suppose ovO

I've been around since LoE's inception, yes. And Equestria Online before that. And Equestria Chronicles before that too.

I think my usual greeting would be rather redundant in your case :P

Shadows are nice. You should see my office. I'll take a photo once I've cleaned the place up some. It's nice and dark in there.

Hello.

My name is not Dave. It's Richard. I'm the forum admin, help run the web host that this site sits on, and work in the Web, PR and Music teams. It's quite likely that you've not seen me much unless you're part of the dev-team or have seen one of the songs I've written for the game on youtube or soundcloud.

My previous intro thread seems to have gone on strike for better work and conditions, so here's another.

If you're after listening to (or downloading even) any of the songs I've composed you can hop over to soundcloud at http://www.soundcloud.com/asteconn/

I'm free for being asked stuff if you're curious too.

If I had the spare money to spend so that you could be ad-free, I would do so. Unfortunately, I'm rather poor. Hopefully something useful might appear in one of these ads sometime!
