Dinosaurs are quite possible looking at the dragons.
But due to it being a fantasy-world, I would guess they looked different than the one we know.

I'm not sure about dragons and dinosaurs having the same roots... Okay, they look pretty similar, but so do dinosaurs and alligators (genetically I guess birds and dinosaurs have more in common, than alligators an dinosaurs).

Why would you think so? Haven't heard of that theory, but a quick Google search showed that you are not the only one thinking this (though I haven't found evidence for that theory yet)...
