Title: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: RainbowDash on 2015 Feb 27, 06:13:30
Well i started playing on the 3 DS if anybody wants to join the fun the game has to offer, just say so :3

Let's group here and exchange friendcodes for questing together!

No talking about the weapons here!

Ps.: What's your favourite monster? Mine's still Rathalos

Let's just make this a general Monster Hunter thread.

Just pay attention to rule 7 of this forum board, we can't mention some of the weapon types. You might already know them. The last thread got canned for this.

Yeah, I'am aware. Just searching for some good people for the game.
I keep it simple so that nothing happens.

Though my first game in this series was MH3U, Zinogre is still my all-time favorite.

Anyway, I don't really have any decent stuff at the moment, but I would like to play with you all at one point.

I remember that guy. I didn't think he'd be as quick as he was. I stepped out of the area and just sat there stunned.

My favorite monster is probably Gigginox or Rathalos.

Zinogre isn't that quick, honestly (unless you got caught up in the triple punch combo).

Spoiler: show
Tigrex is a lot worse... Not only does it hit hard, but you can easily be comboed by anything it does since it hardly lets you have any breathing room, especially if you're alone in the area.

I always have my Shakalaka companions. Does that count as not being alone?

Zinogre IS in 3 and 4, but Tigrex is only in 4 (when you disregard the past games, anyway; for the record, I know both are returning monsters from even before 3/3U/3G).

Spoiler: show
Although it can still climb on walls and ceilings and do electrical attacks like (Baleful) Gigginox, Khezu does EVERY attack slowly. The only real problem I've ever had with it was getting paralyzed from its long range electric attack.

Spoiler: EDIT: Some things I learned about Khezu • show
I know I could've easily looked this up, but one of my friends told me these things:

- Khezu actually came before Gigginox in the older games, so technically (Baleful) Gigginox are the "harder" versions of Khezu.
- The reason why music doesn't play when you're fighting it is because (quoting my friend) "It's a hold over from the previous games. A Monster's music would only play when the Noticed Eye-con would show up. Khezu is blind, so yeah. Specifically, the icon would show up when they see you. They've changed it since then." (If you're wondering, the Noticed Eye-con is the eye symbol that shows up beside you or your partners' names, yellow meaning warning, red meaning spotted by the monster.)

Just a heads up: the first (free) DLC aside from the Starter Pack will be available on March 6 which will contain The Legend of Zelda (rather, Link) stuff plus more.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Metroid one :P (Sorry, you'll have to look up a list of all the crossover DLC yourself.)

Wait, so the Master Sword in Cheeko Sands is LITERALLY going to sit there and troll me for six more days untill I can get it?!
But yeah, I want the Metroid DLC. Ironically, the two I'm looking forward to the most are from games I haven't even played, which is the Mega Man and Dante Palicoes.

You need the required items for them; if even one particular item wasn't obtained (this even applies to ores, bugs, and other stuff you can gather, including drops from other monsters), it won't show up. Same principle applies for all the other equipment.

Lol Imagine if they went with that.
Hunt a Very Dark Zinogre.
Nowhere near as threatening.
Anyway...spoiler for the final boss of the solo quests. And this is a rant, so beware, lots of caps.
Spoiler: show
I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW!!!!
OK, so we hunt a S. Zinogre. I need umbrage from it. WHAT DOES MY FRIEND, WHO DOESN'T NEED AN UMBRAGE, GET?!
Ok, then we fight Shagaru Megala to boost my friend's rank. We demolish it, so now it's my turn to do the quest.
WE'VE FAILED THREE TIMES NOW. Oh, but at least I get a plate. AND MY FRIEND GETS A PHOSGEM.
He then proceeds to tell me he's hunted 7 High Rank Gore Megala, and got THREE NIXGEMS WHEN HE ONLY NEEDED ONE!!

Something similer happened in 3U: My friend has maybe more than THREE BRACH PALLIUMS, AND NOTHING TO USE THEM ON!!!

Farming at the beginning is much easier but later ingame it gets more difficult as everything you build mostly needs a lot of other materials too that you can't only farm from one monster or area

The series is a massive "grind this monster this many times" fest when going after materials for equipment since there isn't a level up system (at least for you; your companions on the singleplayer side level up in the traditional RPG sense, though) which IS very repetitive, but if you set goals for yourself, it's actually not that bad. And there are some monsters that you probably might like for one reason or another (looks, being challenging, etc.). Although playing solo will help you learn how to play, the biggest highlight is being able to play with friends (of course).

Speaking of which, when my friend introduced me to Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U/3DS, though I got the Wii U one first since that version was the only one with online play out of the two), it was kinda a bland solo experience for me at first... That completely changed when I started playing with others online. Granted, it's not exactly a MMORPG experience, it still definitely changed my opinion about the game.

So... yeah. Although this series isn't for everyone, the online experience definitely makes it worthwhile (or at least, gives you a reason to keep playing). If you're truly dedicated, you can easily put over 300 hours into a save file.

EDIT: The Link DLC is now out! Be warned that it's a 7 Star Quest (equivalent to G Rank) even despite the minimal requirement being HR4.

I loved this fight more than Ceadeus, but Ceadeus had some awesome pre-battle moments. Sure Shagaru had some too, but I felt Ceadeus had a more awesome build up.

I feel Shagaru didn't have as much build-up, but an AWESOME fight. Ceadeus, on the other hand, had a load more build up, then lead into a fight that had (in my opinion) one of the most BORING first phases of a boss fight I've ever seen. Kinda killed the whole fight for me.
I wish Dire Miralis was back...

Dire Miralis is one of those gigaaaaaaaaaanitc boss fights where although it looks like the monster is moving slowly, it's actually doing tons of (possible) damage. The music that plays during its fight is pretty epic, though :D

MH3U's was:
  • HR 1-2 for Low

  • HR 3-5 for High

  • HR 6+ for G

MH4U's is:
  • HR 1-3 for Low

  • HR 4-7 for High

  • HR 8-10 is actually G1-G3

  • Certain milestones seem to give you a different crown after beating the G3 Urgent

On another note, MH3U's singleplayer (Port) side was 1-5 star quests for Low, 6-9 for High. MH4U (Caravan) goes 1-6 star quests for Low, 7-10 for High. Endgame quests stayed as High Urgents.

Do you know what a killjoy is? Complete all low-rank quests and you'll see what I mean: THE CARAVANEER'S CHALLANGE.
In this little slice of Tartarus, you need to fight a High-Rank Frenzied Zinogre AND FURIOUS RAJANG AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SANCTUARY!!! Oh, and if you managed to survive that? Nothing much, just fight a High-Rank SHAGARU MEGALA!!!!

This was honestly one of the most frustrating things I've ever done. But, something strange happened; after failing who-knows how many times, I beat it WITHOUT A SINGLE DEATH :I I even posted on Miiverse with a screenshot as proof.

- Zamtrios can't escape certain areas when it's all bloated. Not sure if its subspecies also is affected by this.
- Brute Tigrex can get stuck in a wall (or at least destroyable pillars) when it's trying to ram you. Dunno if this also applies to the regular one.

It's just as it sounds: you capture the monster. The catch (pun intended) is that it needs to reach a certain % first before you can try to do so. The items required for it are (I think) the last two/three items given to you in the Supply Box.

That quest also serves as somewhat of a tutorial in that you can also capture (most) large monsters; the reason why is because the rewards given by doing so can differ depending on the monster.

Learn the movement of the monster and look for openings. Be patient! Quests give you a long time to finish them. Try to dodge after strikes you will recover faster.

Most of the new players don't know that, when you sprint away from a big monster and hitting the dodge button will let your character jump making him invulnerable for the duration of his jump.

Just a note: unless you have Guard Up and are a shield user, there are some attacks that can't be defended against; although dodgerolling is also an option, you're better off divedodging to not get hit by said attacks. DON'T attempt this if the monster's doing a combo attack (like Rathian's triple charge).

Making corrections:

Also, Paralysis (you're on the ground and can't move) can probably be removed quicker via button mashing, but I haven't fully tested that yet. What I know for sure is that if a Palico hits you, you'll be sent flying, but you're invincible during that animation which also gets rid of the Paralysis.

Because players usually want to only do THEIR Urgents then leave. It's annoying, but until Capcom decides to change it to where Urgent Quests count for everyone and not just the quest poster, you'll probably have to rely on friends to get it done. *countless victim*

.... So I decided to take on Dalamadur by myself, considering I can't find a group, and the Wi-fi at the hotel I'm at isn't good enough to hold a connection.

I got about 35 minutes of straight attacking with my Le Traquer, thinking I was going to win soon. I get hit by a meteor and lose my3rd life....

Hmffff, I guess I'll just go back to my strategy of going all out with dual blades. Except I'll actually get a good pair.

I'll probably be back tomorrow.... Maybe....

EDIT: Should I get Silver Rathalos armor? The defense boost is huge compared to every other armor piece I can make. Right now I have full Rath Soul armor, and I feel like I should upgrade.

I always wanted to make S. Rath armour. Don't know what the skills are, but if the def. is good, then go for it.
That reminds me, I have this...grudge or something against S. Rathalos. When me and my friend first fought it in 3U, I was getting hit left and right...but I never felt like I was in danger. I just can't take the thing seriously for some reason.
And now for good news...
Me and my friend managed to beat a quest on our own.
Fighting two Deviljho with no armour.
WITH ONLY TWO PEOPLE.
I'm on a huge adrenalin rush right now.

Once you complete the FIRST High Rank Urgent, your HR uncaps to what it should be (basically, it totals up all the quests you did--Caravan and Gathering Hall/Online, and it can continue to raise all the way up to 999). You don't become G Rank until you complete the SECOND High Rank Urgent.

Did a lot of solo quests for the past 2 days. Wow, they keep you on your toes, I can't decide which one I like the most so far, either the White Monoblos, Tigrex/Brute Tigrex duo, or the Dah'Ren that starts absurdly close to your ship in the second phase. I love all of them!

Woo! Finished my Dire Miralis set, boosting my defense by over 140, giving me better buffs, while granting more gem space and eliminating the need for the gems I used before, giving me more opportunity to fight.

On a side note, anyone know how to make Brachydios dual blades? I haven't looked too far into it, but right now I can only find a start by starting with Yian-Kut-Ku+ dual blades, later upgrading into what I want. Problem is, there are no regular Kut-Ku missions that I know of, only guild quests and that one annoying capture quest, which is hard to do at my level. I'd really like to get those blades, as they were part of my signature set-up from the last game, and I really love their glowing slime designs.  :3

Certain monsters are Guild Quest-/Expedition-only after defeating them in a Caravan-specific Quest; Yian Kut-Ku is one of them. (And obviously, its subspecies.)
Title: Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: Sunshine Smash on 2015 Apr 29, 10:50:43
Exactly, I don't want to grind expeditions just to get the chance to fight this one monster, I barely see anyone hunting one, and even then, there's no guarantee it's a low-rank. If it's the only option, I will, but I want to know if there's another way.

What does Fate do?

Increases rewards from defeating a large monster, NOT capturing it. Consequently, if you have the negative versions of the skill, it lowers rewards.

If you're curious about the capture-based skill, it's called Tranquilzr (that's not a typo, by the way) which actually doesn't have any negative versions.

As far as I know, both skills only apply to you, but I could be wrong.

It's a bit of a pain getting by using ranged weapons, particularly when pretty much all the bows and such either have A: Bad stats but able to use pretty much all coatings, or B:Excellent stats, superb even, BUT unable to use almost any kind of coating, especially the ones that actually increase damage, such as Power or C. Range, even worse, they're the ones that have stuff like Pierce 2 and Rapid 3 just to mention an example.

Except thus far I simply can't seem to find a good bow that's going to work, right now I'm using the scylla fist I, which works fairly well for me, though there's the annoyance with no damage-enhancing coatings being avalible, the Hunter's Stoutbow seems promising though, I just have to actually get dragonite ore. I'm starting to think I should just grind up ketchubucabra or whatever it's called, get enough for blademaster armor and then go melee instead.

Yeah I've pretty much decided by now, I think I'm gonna farm up the armor that uses gloamberry, can't remember what it's called but it has slightly better defense than tetsucabra and should only take a few merchant trips to multiply the ingredients enough, which is easy when you have harvest tour quests, just spend the time fishing for goldenfish and the like untill the ticket comes.

Personally I really don't bother farming items from a monster that is a pain to kill, generally this is decided by three factors from me: Does it combo constantly? Does it apply poison over and over and over very frequently? Does it hit me so much it goes through all my field supplies? If all three are yes then I'm either not ever again touching the quest, the only exceptions being monsters that feel fair and avoidable, for example the Zinogre.

I hate the monsters that apply poison frequently, the Yian Garuga in particular, and that is me talking with a Palico setup that has my palico set up with 3 support first stringers and 2 defense ones.

Following your three factors:

On an additional note: there seem to be more quests in this game compared to past ones where you don't start at home base, but even then there's not always a bed.

Following your three factors:
  • The only real combo I've seen is a spin attack in which it hits you with its very long tail. There's some delay before each spin though, so I guess it's not really a combo since you can guard/dodge in time.

  • It uses Blastblight clouds, but it doesn't constantly use them. If anything, you're probably gonna get hurt by its fire attacks... or literally by its body (standing near it during certain times will actually damage you due to the extreme heat).

  • I'm not sure I can answer that last factor properly since I've only fought it once so far, but I did go through like 15 Mega Potions (10 at start, 5 via Combo List), and you don't start at home base, so...

On an additional note: there seem to be more areas in this game where you don't start at home base compared to past games, but even then there's not always a bed.

Err what? No, the Yian Garuga's tail is also poisonous, and it has a tendency to use it's tail attack quite a lot, not to mention it moves just a smidge too fast for my liking with it's recovery, it doesn't have any heat AOE attacks either, are you sure you're not thinking of the Gypceros? You might need to go through your monster information list.
And how the heck did you go through so many potions against the Zinogre? I was using a coiled nail najarala longsword and had not too much trouble, I only went through about 6 mega potions, and that was with me being actually fairly agressive, personally I haven't seen much of a use for the bed either frankly, the only times I actually return to base camp is because of fainting, which is pretty rare, or because I am on a mission where I can afford going back to pick up supplies, some of which might even be needed to finish the mission.
And you DO start at home base for the Zinogre mission, the bed is literally behind you at the start of the mission, sure you just didn't read the map right and notice the base camp at heaven's mount is actually closer to the middle this time?

I've been curious about this for a while, and this video raises my interests. What is Monster Hunter Frontier? Are they like the main series games? Because I find it kind of odd that Zinogre has an after credits scene. Everyone knows what Zinogre is and what it can do. Just seems kind of odd to give it a tense after-credit scene.
Title: Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: Rikaria on 2015 May 08, 15:21:11
Frontier is basically the MMORPG console/PC port of the series, with more quests/monsters/items/etc. being added each patch (NOT DLC like in MH3U/MH4U).

Anyway, after I eat lunch, I'll post a Gathering Hall ID for Crimson Fatalis.

EDIT: Change of plans (kinda): I also need G Rank Black Gravios and G Rank Special Permit Shah Dalamadur. Though C.Fatalis is still top priority, I'll probably cycle between the three since I'll be needing very rare items from the other two. The ID is: 45-9605-3910-5562. The Passcode is: 0511.

Okay that does sound pretty awesome, and most likely won't be ported like many other games that would sell up a storm here, for example 3D fighters, basically dragonball xenoverse but better and with no RPG stuff for example.

I closed the room, anyway. I guess I'll just hunt with randoms for the time being.

Well.. at least you can sell the extra Cortexes.

Speaking of which, for me I try to keep one full stack of each monster material (save certain ones used for combinations) then sell any extras for more Zenny. Then again, you can just farm G Rank Akantor then sell its stuff for literally 100k+ each successful hunt.

(For those wondering why I mentioned the above:

Ugh, the only lightning type dual blades I can make require 4 paddock oils. It's terrible, I've gone through about 10 hunts and only got 3.

Paddock oil is a horrible item to farm, so few quests give you that, and you can't even make more with frenzy crystals like you can with frost sac!

It's an absolute nightmare. But it's worth it to get powerful dual blades with every elemental coverage.

And my Lightbreak Twins, cause they're awesome!

So I'm pretty much at the point where I have everything I want for now (at least until more Event Quests come), so if anyone needs help with anything, just post a Gathering Hall ID/create a room (if I have you as a friend) and I'll try to be there. It doesn't matter even if you're HR1.

Anyone know what a good pair of fire dual blades are? I'm leaning towards the final stage of the Melting Wail, forget it's name. It has great attack and mixes high poison with high fire, but also has -10% affinity. Should I stick with it? I could probably add gems to counter that, but I don't know if it's really worth it.....

Also, really, the Twinbane Twilights require G-rank Black Fatalis parts, just like the Ultimus Apocalypse? That's really annoying... I'm kept from two extremely powerful blades just because G- Rank Fatalis doesn't exist yet.....

Yeah, saw it earlier. Seeing as I've never played any past games before MH3U, I don't know what to make of the "crossovers", but those new attacks (at least, in my point of view) are definitely gonna make hunts A LOT more interesting.

EDIT: New DLC coming out tomorrow (June 5)!

The DLC quests don't look to have that, one of the quests are a pretty nice reference to DMC it looks like, the good one, not the complete garbage reboot which, while admittedly good in it's own way, falls abysmally short of the good ones in pretty much every aspect.

That's.... Not horrible... But I would much prefer G-rank Fatalis. I still really want to make my Twinbane Twilights to boost to purple sharpness with modifications.   X3

Now I'm just imagining you swinging around two Twilight Sparkles, haha.

Also, I recently found I actually do pretty well with hunting horns, again. And I found one with pretty good bonuses too, the shell castanet, can give Health boost(L), Defense boost(L) and Attack boost(L), along with wind pressure nullification, that has a pretty darned good set of bonuses it can give out, keeping them all up is really difficult though.
Title: Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: Rikaria on 2015 Jun 05, 09:19:31
That Horn would be really nice in (Rusted) Kushala Daora hunts... even though you can't completely negate their black wind, but hey /o/
Title: Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: Chibalt on 2015 Jun 05, 10:06:12
Probably would be pretty handy, I just never really used the hunting horns before that one for a very simple reason: The bonuses they gave with melodies were freaking useless, pretty much only Small bonuses, not much bonuses at all or element-specific resistances and the like.
Title: Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Post by: Rikaria on 2015 Jun 05, 14:51:59
They're only small if you use the song once; repeat the same one immediately after to get a better bonus.

Still nowhere near the same as when you do the same with L bonuses, just feels WAY more useful.

Most annoying part is always getting that 1-2 drops you need to finish making a set.
Grats. I still need Gore just for ma spiffy new dragon lance.

Grrr! Darned Pink Rathian! >:(
I can't beat her for the life of me!

Any ideas? I got some pretty fire resistant armor, but the poison is a pain in the flank.
I don't have time to drink the antidote due to it's speed.

I probably shouldn't take a great-sword due to it's poor speed, so I tried some faster weapons and still got my flank handed to me.
I'm going to hate the Azure and Silver Rathilos...aren't I? -.-

Im doing an Urgent and whenever I get people to do it (after about 10 minutes of waiting) everyone disconnects in the middle of the fight.

And how so you get better armor without frustration?

Honestly, that's why I love the lance. Quick block, especially if auto block is up, a dodge ability and a "get out of the way charge" attack.

I tried the lance, but it seems so weak on attack that I take too long, plus it's dodge moves aren't as fast.
(Or is it just me?)

Though anything with a shield + Dash juice = awesome.
'Cause when those monster do those mega super duper uber long combo strings you can take them all and still have enough energy to run/dodge.

So, something tells me I need better armor, I have a full Gore set, but I don't think that's even close to enough for what I intend to be doing.
I'm trying to get that full set of...
Spoiler: show
Link armor and sword and shield

But it's clearly out of my skill/equipment level.

Lance just takes time to get used to. You can spam jump the dodge in whichever direction you need, on the fly, when you get good at it.
Big swords aren't terrible though. Just have to remember the combo setups for which ones allow getting away easier.

I just got the EX Poise.
(Dah'ren Moran, Sword and shield.)
So I'm using a lot of sword and shield stuff now because all my other gear is really lame.
I want some decent other gear, but it all is sooooo hard to get, in order to be good enough to get it I need the gear I'm trying to get! lol

That...or the stuff is ugly as Diamond Tiara's flank. =P

Is Hunter Rank 2 still at Low level quests? They're at High level minimum, and you have around 10-20% chance of mining it in most areas.

I totally derped there, I'm HR4. lol Sorry.
But I found where to find them, still need to get TO them though...lol
Thanks regardless. :]

Post Merge

So, I got the full Seregios armor set...
You know how it has that LeapDodge boost so you fly muuuch farther and so you can do it whenever?

Well, I was trying to find a Azure Rathalos in the Volcanic hollow...
I'm in area 8 on top of that plateau and I leap off it...it's also a downward hill...

I basically flew down half of the area like Nacho Libre at the end of the movie!
